Sib. 7.5: Sending score between Desktop and Laptop
Posted by Pilotone Music - 22 Jul 11:47PM
After decades of working only on a Desktop, I got my first laptop, a MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013). Definitely a learning curve involved, along with getting new external hardware such as the ASUS portable monitor, a Logitech Solar keyboard for Mac and a Behringer midi keyboard. Still need an external CD/DVD drive or recorder) and headphones.

But my immediate question is: How do I open the latest changes of a score I'm working on in the other computer.......back and forth between the Desktop and the Laptop? I just tested by creating a new score in the Laptop, closing Sibelius, then opening Sibelius again, but now in the Desktop to see if the new score transfers over. It doesn't. There are definite gaps in my basic knowledge of things technical, and this reveals one of them. Probably a simple and obvious answer, but how do I get the latest work I've done on the Desktop to open on the laptop? And vice versa? Do I have to "share" with myself as an email? Or????

Thanks so much for some enlightenment!
Beth

You could email it to yourself. Or simply copy or save the file on a USB flash drive and transfer it to the laptop (which I assume has USB slots?)

Or you could use something like Dropbox to keep your files in. Then they would be synchronized between both desktop and laptop al the time. I find it to be hugely useful.

Using Dropbox means that you have only one active version of the file.
It's also saved locally which updates when you log on.
Scores are also saved in the local backup folder every time you press save - so it's fairly 'fireproof' if you mess up.

You can also invite others to share the file.

The problem with email is that you create a further copy every time it's sent. If you don't ever lose track of which is the latest version then no problem.

USB stick is probably the simplest solution, and works across PC and mac.

Or -- but I'm not sure if this will work for you -- you can create a network between computer where you can access one file from different computers.

The question illustrates a common misapprehension, that your Sibelius scores are somehow "in Sibelius", your Word documents "in Word" etc.

They are in fact data files, stored in a folder on your computer, like books on a bookshelf. The Sibelius program is the person who visits the bookshelf, opens a book and then reads or writes in it. Another Sibelius, on another computer, must arrange for the file, or a copy of it, to be sent to HIS library. Or, in this age of networking and Internet, the file may be kept in a central depository where several users can access it.

Once you get your head around this concept, methods of accessing them from another computer or copying them to another computer are much easier to understand.
