Sib. 7.5: So long loading sounds

Why does Sibelius take about 8 minutes to load sounds each time I open up a file? Irritating

Details of your system would help us to comment, particularly how much RAM you have. Please give details as in my signature below.

That suggests that either or both (a) the sample library is stored on a very slow disk device or connection, or (b) there is not enough RAM in the PC so that the system is driven into swapping virtual memory onto disk.

My following comments apply only if you run Windows 10 (and probably not even then).

I had a problem that matches your very brief description after upgrading from Win7 to Win10. Instruments for a large orchestral score that had loaded in 35 seconds under Win7 were taking 5-6 minutes (from an SSD). Diagnostic tools showed that most of the time no I/O was taking place - Sibelius was just sitting waiting for the load to happen.

A clean reinstall of Win10 fixed it ... on that PC.

On another PC everything was fine after the Win10 upgrade until I had to do a clean reinstall for other reasons. The problem appeared *after* doing the clean reinstall. Same symptoms except that the original load time was a bit under 30 seconds (faster drive and processor than in the other PC.)

Nobody on this forum or on Win10 fora reported anything like this, but several people suggested upgrading drivers - always a good idea when installing Win10. It not only did no good, it made things worse; part way through the load the PC would hang up and have to be rebooted.

A 2nd clean reinstall of Win10 fixed the load problem - back to 30 seconds to load all instruments for a symphony orchestra.

No explanation for either of these PCs. All installations - update in place or clean - seemed ok. No errors reported.

Aside from technical glitches, in general I find that the built in Sibelius take (too) long to load, and Sibelius has an annoying habit of reloading and purging sounds if you go from one score to another, rather than just keeping everything in memory (to the extent possible, and assuming the computer has enough memory).

You might want to consider NotePerformer which (a) loads super fast, (b) does have this annoying loading / unloading behavior, (c) is very light on resources and (d) sounds remarkably well. And it's not expensive at all, I believe a little over $100.

If you are creating music for larger ensembles, NP is great. It is my goto library for almost all of my music. Smaller ensembles have a few weaknesses, but nothing that can't be overcome.

I agree that NotePerformer is pretty good for large ensembles. I *don't* agree that the (not so) few weaknesses for solo instruments can be overcome.

Long ago I formulated the Fundamental Law of Sampling:

The solution to all known problems with the quality of playback from sample libraries is "buy another library".

It's basically the same business model used by drug dealers ;)
