Sib. 8.4.1: No sound out (almost) - fixed
Posted by Herb Gellis - 21 Jul 10:38PM (edited 23 Jul 12:22AM)
I just installed 8.4.1 on a fresh Win10 system (no other Sibelius had been there before). The Sibelius install seemed to go fine, also the D/L of the massive Sibelius Sounds 7.5, and then the Sibelius Sounds Updaters 7.5, which made the Sibelius 7 Sounds available in the Playback Devices Configuration, showing the Sibelius Player with Sibelius 7 Sounds in the Active devices. The Manual Sound Sets tab shows Sibelius Player as the Device.

So... I tried an existing score, none of the sounds played except snare drum! I created a brand new score (classical orchestra), put in a few notes here and there, but nothing played. I added snare drum to the system, and that one played back! The mixer shows all instruments had sliders well up.

Based on another thread I checked the version of the Realtek Digital Out, and the driver was version 10.0.10586.0, dated 10/29/2015 from Microsoft Windows, so much more recent than previously suggested.

It will be quite boring to only be able to play snare drum ;-) Any help on this, please, please, please?

More sleuthing...

Under Sound, video and game controllers of the Win10 Device Manager, the Realtek high definition audio driver shows a different story. It was driver 6.0.1.7553, dated 7/7/2015. Was this the driver that needed updating? Still strange that one sound would work, and not the others.

Note I am actually playing through a USB connection to an external DAC (Emotiva DC-1) using MME, which plays the opening Sibelius startup music just fine.

You need at least version 6.0.1.7541 dated 18th June 2015, so your version is fine.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds

In that folder, right-click on sub-folder "Sibelius 7 Sounds" and select "Properties". Read off "Size" in bytes, and "Contains" numbers of files and folders, and report those back here.

You have not installed the "Sibelius 7 Sounds" sample library. Please install the full "Sibelius 7 Sounds" sample library (the large download).

Ok, I'm doing that now (installing). I had run this before as well, and it ended relatively quickly. Then D/L'd the Updater. I guess I had the order wrong?

Anyway, this is (slowly) going through a real installation process, showing its progress, sample pack by pack. I suspect this will work.

Thanks (in advance) Robin!

Go and make a cup of tea - and maybe a bit of supper while it's working. The download is long but the installation always seems longer!

If it's any consolation, the EWQLSO took forever and a day from DVD. I believe you can get the whole thing on a memory sick these days!

You do not need the updater at all. The updater is only for those who have already installed an earlier version of the Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library.

Don't forget to download and install the bass clarinet patch.

Thanks Jeff, but it seems they have fixed that problem. The D/L of the Sibelius Sounds that I did this week had the bass clarinet in it, and it (and the other orchestral sounds) seemed to be working fine.

The Bass clarinet patch replaces the shipping Bass clarinet which is what causes the issues. These are not always related to there being a bass clarinet in the music, ensembles without bc can still be affected.

Just do it. You know it makes sense.
