Can't change trill interval
Posted by Robert Enns - 15 Jul 03:01AM
I've never encountered this before but currently when I select a trill I can't change the number of half steps in the inspector. Some show 2 and some are 1 for no apparent musical reason but none can be changed.
For instance Key of D and a trill on A# which should trill one half step is showing a stubborn 2.
This is happening in 8.4.

Please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which exhibits this issue, and direct us to the location of the problem inside it.

The Inspector has 3 options for the interval: Auto, Diatonic and Fixed. Would 'Diatonic' solve the problem?

Yes, just tried this in 8.3. I'm getting the same. There is no diatonic option setting and default half steps cannot be edited. Is this yet another new bug for Sib.8?

It doesn't do this in 8.4.1, so upgrade is probably the solution.

You cannot change the trill steps while "Interval" is set to "Auto" or "Diatonic". You need to select "Interval" = "Fixed" before you can adjust the steps manually.

Working as published for me in 8.3
As stated above, you cannot change this value when set to
'Diatonic' or 'Auto'
Only available when 'Interval' is set to 'Fixed'

Thanx, Roy. How come I never had a problem with this in 7.1.3? Why the confusing change in 8? All I needed to do previously was to un-check "Diatonic" in order to set my required interval. And what idiotic rule does "Auto" follow, and why is that the new factory default? In Robert's score, an auto trill on A# in the key of D was forcing 2 semitones. I have tried exactly the same situation (same key, same note) in 2 new scores, getting zero semitones in one, and 1 semitone in the other. Seems like "auto" just produces a random number.

There was no change in Sibelius 8: Sibelius 8 is the same as Sibelius 7.5 was. Sibelius 7.5 made lots of changes for trills and other ornaments.

Same for me in 8.4.1 So to reconstruct Robert Enns' problem first do Fixed > 2 halfsteps, then set to Auto or Diatonic and notice the '2' can't be changed.

I presume the same happens when you update a score in which the trill was set already.

I am running 8.4.1
If I change to fixed (I didn't notice it was on Auto) then I can change.
I don't remember ever having to have it on "fixed" before I could change the interval.
Am I imagining this as a change?

You're not the only one, Robert. I never used 7.5, so I missed that change. I don't see what use Auto is when it gives three different results (so far) in the same situation. Why does it default to Auto?

I really would like to know why trills default to Auto in Sib8 and what rule Auto actually follows. And why the interval is fixed in Auto or Diatonic mode and not fixed in Fixed mode. None of this makes any sense to me. If anyone understands any of this, can they please explain it to me.

As I understand it, Diatonic should trill according to the key, so if, say, your music was in D and trilling on a c# it should trill to the D, but if you had it on a D it would trill to an E.

I do not know the rules for Auto - I never use it.

Fixed allows you the user to fix the interval to however many semitones you want.

So why does a trill default to "Auto" if nobody knows what it is supposed to do? And the fact that a trill is not<\b> fixed when "Fixed" is selected is very confusing. Wouldn't "Edit" be a more intelligent label? And what was wrong with the old system when you only needed to choose between Diatonic or Editable?

I'm still eager to discover what "Auto" is supposed to do and why it is the default. Do the Avid developers know?

If you select 'Fixed' then change the value from 1 to 2.

Then go to Auto, the new value sticks.

It allows any value up to 62, after which it goes negative!

Like Adrian, I can't see a use for it as it only changes the selected trill and you can't change 'Auto' to a new default.

You can do select all and change all of them to fixed and then do individuals.
