Making Solid Hairpins/Wedges for Saariaho-like engraving
Posted by Joshtakovich - 18 Jun 04:11PM (edited 18 Jun 04:13PM)
I'm engraving a piece which calls for solid wedges to indicate progressive changes in bow pressure, much the same way that hairpins do for dynamics. I assume the easiest way to do that in the confines of Sibelius would be some alteration of hairpins to make their interior solid, but I haven't found any way to do so.

What I've tried so far: I've tried making new lines based on hairpins. You can mess with the aperture, but the only line-based way to attempt to fill in the space between the hairpin is by increasing the line thickness. This unfortunately means the hairpin doesn't start from a small point, so it looks weird and much less drastic. I've also tried fooling with erased background text boxes, but I couldn't find anything which works.

I'm including a picture from the front matter of a solo cello work by Kaija Saariaho showing what I'm trying to replicate. Help with any of the three distinct wedges would be appreciated. Thanks!

The best way is to start with a horizontal line. Switch off magnetic layout. Select the right handle, do copy and paste and move the new handle down with one or two pressures only on the down arrow. Repeat this procedure as many times as needed. When you've obtained a satisfactory result you can export the result as a tiff image and re-import. In this way you can increase length and width of the object.
Cumbersome but do-able!

I don't see any way to do this in Sibelius. If you are in Sib 7 or later, you could create them as SVG graphics in something like Illustrator or InkScape (free) and import them. They will scale to some degree.

They will have no playback abilities, so you may need to use hidden
hairpins or other mechanisms if you need playback to be affected.

Hi

The best way I have of doing this is to make a thick horizontal line (as thick as the thickest point of your wedge), and then use two or more lines at an angle, turned white and correctly layered, to obscure the bits of the black rectangle you don't want.

The cases illustrated in the attachment to the original post are probably best handled as imported scalable vector graphics (SVGs).

A single SVG of a black right-angled triangle can be scaled, inverted, or rotated to create most of the solid black shapes shown.

Similarly, single SVG of a white right-angled triangle with black borders would serve for the bordered shapes.

The stripy object could be created as a single SVG as well.

Just one hint: when making SVGs for import into Sibelius, make sure that they do NOT have "responsive" properties (SVGs for the web are made "responsive"). Sibelius goes berserk if given a "responsive" SVG.
