Sib. 5.x - 8: Plugin Update: Line Between Notes
Posted by Bob Zawalich - 17 Jun 11:25PM (edited 19 Jun 12:41AM)
The downloadable plugin Line Between Notes has bee updated and is available for free download from
http://www.sibelius.com/download/plugins/index.html?plugin=306. In Sib 7+ use the plugin installer from category Lines.

Given 2 notes, the plugin will draw a line between them. If the notes are on different staves, the plugin used to leave the end of the line dangling in the original staff (because in Sibelius lines are defined entirely within one staff).

Plugins cannot tell how much space there is between staves, so one cannot tell where to place the end of the line vertically. But I decided that a guess might be better than what we had, so if the notes are on different staves, I will use the default Spaces Between Staves settings from Engraving Rules unless you choose a custom distance. You might want to do that if you have a lot of glisses between 2 staves.

If you go to File > Preferences >Other and change Staff Rules to use spaces as units, and then use View > Show Staff Rulers, you can get the number the plugin wants for a custom space between staves.

If that distance is correct the plugin does a good job locating such lines.

The screenshot shows before and after.

I have been doing a lot of work with harp music, and I got tired of dragging gliss lines.

Cheers

Thanks. I've used the original plugin a lot and this update will make it even better!

Thanks Bob, as always. I'm looking forward to trying this the next time I write harp glisses across the grand staff.

If you have a lot of them it is well worth setting up the distance between staves so it matches reality. The plugin will use the Engraving Rules value by default, but in my experience that distance is not all that common. Even if it is not right, though it should be closer than it was before.

But if you set the staff rules to use spaces and view staff rules it is easy to find the right distance.

I find this change to be really useful.

Dear Bob,

I've only started using this plugin recently and boy has it saved me a LOT of heartache and mousing-frustration. Thank you!

One question: in the list of available lines, there seems to be a bit of spare space - perhaps for extra line types? Is it possible to use, for example, a "bend" line that has been created using the Gliss line type as the starting point?

So I suppose my question is whether the user can add their own lines to the plugin.

Thanks

Matthew

Users can't directly add line types and there are tricks played so that the line names get translated so I would not recommend messing with the code on this one.

But the way to code works, it will pick up any user defined lines it finds in the score that are derived from GlissandoLine, Line, BeamLine, Slur, CrescendoLine, or DiminuendoLine objects, and it will put them in the list box. So give it a try. It will probably work. Screenshot shows an example.

So to pick up a user defined line, add one to the score, if only temporarily, so the plugin can find it.

The list box really has lots of room. If it runs out it will add a scroll bar.

Wow, thanks Bob, that indeed did work.

Very much appreciate your work with this one. If only I could have it as a permanent fixture in the Ribbon.

You can assign a keyboard shortcut to it and you can choose which plugin menu it will go into on the ribbon.
