Upgrade 8.3 gives no sound whatsoever
Posted by Jody Hughes - 17 Jun 08:44AM
Hi there

Long time no see.

I upgraded to 8.3 last week, as a client required it. The process, though anxiety-producing, did result in a usable activated copy of 8.3.

However, there is no sound. I've tried with various sound configurations (basic MIDI, Sibelius 6, Sibelius 7) all of which work in the other versions (Sib 6 and Sib 7.5) which I'm running on this machine.

Output is through the built-in speakers, sound is working in other apps.

Can anyone help?

thanks in advance
Jeremy

Please attach screen-shots of the following Sibelius dialogue windows:
1. Playback Devices;
2. Audio Engine Options.

In Audio Engine Options:

a. Ensure that the ReWire "Repair" and "Clean Up" buttons are de-activated (greyed out): if not, click them and restart Sibelius until they are inactive.

b. Ensure that "Use virtual instruments and effects" is checked.

Hi Robin

Screenshots attached.

As you can see, the Repair button is active (ungrey); clicking on causes me to be asked for my password to make changes, but it remains active; nothing changes (within the session or after a restart). Multiple clicks seem to do nothing.

I've never knowingly used ReWire, and have nothing attached to the computer which might confuse Sib.

Incidentally, there is a problem with the focus after closing the Audio Engine Options dialog: focus is passed to the open score rather than the parent dialog (Playback Devices) which is still open behind the score.

Anyway, if you know what repairing ReWire does, I can try to do it manually.

cheers and thanks

Playback Devices shows "Sibelius 6 Essentials" soundset is selected: but is this sample library actually installed on this Mac?

For manual correction of ReWire problems, see:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Error_Message/en363759

Sibelius will start in ReWire mode if it is launched while a ReWire host is in the background (such as GarageBand, or any other DAW).

Restart the Mac OS before trying Sibelius again.

Hi

Taking your points in order:

Yes Sibelius 6 Essentials is installed, and it works in Sib 6 and Sib 7.5. To reiterate: I get no sound regardless of which soundset I choose, including the General MIDI (basic) option, and I've tried all soundsets which work in Sib 6.2 and Sib. 7.5, which are also installed on this computer.

I have followed the advice on the ReWire link you gave – there are no files at all in the folder Macintosh HD/Users/[my username]/Library/Application Support/Avid/Common, so I couldn't delete the sibelius.rewire file. (No files in the equivalent folder for Sibelius 6, either.) The rest of the advice in that link is about downloading updated soundcard drivers, which doesn't apply.

As far as I know, I have no DAW (certainly not GarageBand) installed on this computer. At the moment the only open apps are Mail, Safari and Sibelius. There is still no sound in Sib.

I have just shut down and restarted the computer. No change.

Perplexity quotient: high. Any other ideas?

My perplexity quotient is even higher, because a Mac should not be showing the "Virtual Instruments and Effects Folder" configuration, as that is a Windows-only option!!!

The "Repair" button remaining activated is also a mystery, and is almost certainly correlated with the cause of the no-audio-output problem.

In the "Interface" drop-down, are there any other options listed? If so, what are they?

Hi

AirPlay (Core Audio) is the only other option, which I think would allow me to stream sound to another device connected wirelessly. It was not selected by default nor did it do anything when I selected it.

Okay, I think we can stand down.

It turns out that all the Sib 8 files I've tried have come from a single composer, working in a Spanish-language version of Sibelius. None of them with working sound.

In fact sound works fine in a file started from scratch. I'm slightly embarrassed that I didn't try this before posting here.

So as the problem is score-related, I am content to let it lie.

Sorry about that!

Hi Jeremy,

I'm interested to take a look to see if I can reproduce here (wondering if there is a potential bug). If you'd be happy to, please can you share some of the scores?
