Sib. 7.1.3: Adding a clef symbol to Instrument Name?
Posted by Glen Shannon - 15 Jun 09:12PM
Hi, the Great Bass Recorder is usually provided in both treble- and bass-clef parts, because that widens the availability. Not all Great Bass players can read C fingerings in bass clef and generally play it like it's just a large Tenor.

My question is, can I put the clef symbol right into the Instrument name in the File Info, so the clef can travel with and behave along with the rest of the instrument name?

Thanks for any insights,
Glen Shannon

Type "Great Bass Recorder &" or "Great Bass Recorder ?", then select the ampersand or query character and change its font to Opus. You may need to reduce them in size too.

Whoops- now I need to detach the two parts from each other so changes to one aren't mirrored in the other...

I don't know what you mean by detach the parts. Do you have 2 recorders on the same part? You should start with a single instrument, create a new part as a duplicate of the first, make one treble clef and the other bass clef. You will no doubt need to make an octave transposition in one of the parts. And having looked at the instrument list, you will also need to create a new instrument for Great Bass Recorder TC, changing the octave transposition. See attached. Look in score info for each of the 2 parts for wildcards used in instrument names.

Very cool technique with the wildcard codes! Thanks for sending the file.
Yes, that's exactly how I created the second part, as a clone of the first with a clef and transposition change.

The use of the copy and change instrument too in parts is really only for parts where the main difference is a transposition or clef. If there are differences in the notation (ie they don't always play the same pitches) it is better to have completely separate parts.

It isn't that much extra work to create a new staff and then triple click the original and [alt]click at the start of the new staff.

BTW, they are not wildcards, they are just the characters used for those symbols in the music font. A wildcard is quite a different animal!

But the codes for font change and font size in the part name field are listed under wildcards in the user manual. I know this, Mike, because that's where I found them.

Mebbe, Adrian, but the actual characters for Bass clef and Treble clef are only characters in the music font.

Thanks all - that is my new approach rather than using the Parts tab to get that new part: to create the new instrument (Great Bass TC), add it to the score, triple-click the bass-clef music and alt-click to populate the new part. Focus on Staves to hide it in the score, and put in the special codes in the File Info. It works so much better, thanks for all the help.
