Jexit: James' exit
Posted by James - 15 Jun 01:36AM (edited 15 Jun 01:38AM)
I am not going to subscribe to Sib at this time.

I have stayed with Sib 6.2 because I can't stand the ribbon. There were a few nice improvements in Sib 7 like font capabilities and easy access to spacing between staves. But not enough for me.

There have been a few small improvements in Sib 8 like the time signature before the forward facing repeat sign, the alignment of first and second ending brackets, and rests better placed vertically. But not enough for me.

In my opinion, Sib 6.2 is still the best version and it seems to be very stable even in the latest MacOS releases. So I'm not going to pay for a few small improvements, perhaps greater instability, and hostage pricing.

I will, however, continue to participate in this forum, with cheerful help and suggestions, off beat humor, American spelling, and tremendous anglophilia (especially in the humor department and sundry Britishisms).

Humor (sorry humour) is forbidden on this forum, unless it's directed at the Avid bosses and lack of v.8 worth. Actually, I like the new Print page and PDF export in v.7. Like you I haven't heard of anything remarkable in 7.5 or 8 (post-Daniel) worth having. If I do decide to upgrade from 7.1.3, it will purely be so that I can open files that are posted here.

Argh. Well, the Jexit is aborted and the ransom, er, I mean upgrade price, has been paid.

I feel so sordid.

When I learned that eventually new macs will have a file system that is incompatible with the old Sibelius Sounds, I decided to bite the bullet. Someday I may need a new mac and I may need a version of Sib that works with it.

For now I'm not even downloading or using the new version.

You have my sympathy, James.

I sat myself down the other day and tried to list the pros and cons of being on, or off, the wagon - so to speak.

I'm not a Mac user, thankfully.

I really couldn't think of any good reasons to pay and upgrade; just a few along the lines of "it might be useful, but I can't see why right now". 8.3 has no improvements that will make any real difference to me and I haven't seen any sufficiently tantalising glimpses of the future beyond 8.3.

I could think of a lot of reasons not to pay.

And elsewhere there are some extremely tantalising visions of what will in all probability be the future of notation.

It's a no-brainer, really. For me, at least.

Fortunately I'm an education user - but I had thought about upgrading. The only reason for doing so was because I didn't want to fall off the bandwagon. But since I won't (and I have a confirmation email from Avid that that is the case), I can see no reason to upgrade. The reasons have been discussed endlessly here so I won't repeat them!

I do feel sorry for the current Sibelius team - they get a huge amount of stick here and none of it is their fault - they are as much at the mercy of Avid as we users are, arguable more so. But that is no reason to pay out money for something that I don't think is worthwhile.

And with Dorico not that far off and looks very very interesting, even allowing for the things that won't be there in version 1, I think my money is better saved for that.

And sadly, for the future of Sibelius, I suspect many are thinking the same.

extortion - the practice of obtaining something, esp. money, through force or threats.

If Avid had a mum, she would scold him and tell him to start behaving nicely again.

Think positive. If the USA elects Trump as president, maybe he will close down all companies with presidents and CEOs who have Mexican-sounding names like Hernandez.

If it was not for the liberal bankruptcy laws in the US, where would Trump be? Most likely working for someone with Mexican heritage and name.

There's one thing I don't understand about the US political system. Doesn't the 2nd amendment give every citizen the constitutional right to own a gun for the purpose of shooting politicians that they don't like? Or am I interpreting an old document written in a strange sort of English too literally? ;)
