(Sam) Renewing your Upgrade and Support Plan
Posted by Sam at Sibelius - 03 Jun 02:06PM (edited 31 Aug 05:37PM)
As you know, owning Sibelius now comes with access to a year of upgrades and support, allowing you to receive features and improvements as we release them. It also gives you access to our technical support team, in case you need their help with anything (getting help with installation and product activation is always available, of course).

After this initial year, you can renew this for $89 for 1 year, or $199 for 3 years, to give you peace of mind that you're covered.

You can see the time period next to each product in your My Avid Account, at my.avid.com/products, telling you when you next need to renew by. You can either renew directly from the product in your account, or buy renewals from your nearest reseller. If you buy a renewal from a reseller, you will find an activation code in the box to enter in your My Avid Account under the appropriate Sibelius product section.

After successfully renewing, you'll see the time period is extended by a year (or three).

Any questions, please ask. I'll try and keep the following FAQs up to date too.

Sam

Some FAQs:

Q. Can I turn on Auto-renew?
A. Not at this time. For now, you'll need to manually renew through you’re My Avid Account at my.avid.com/products or through your reseller.

Q. How will I get notified I need to renew?
A. We'll notify you by email at regular intervals to warn you of an upcoming renewal. You'll also get a notification from Application Manager, which is installed on your computer

Q. What happens if I miss the renewal deadline?
A. There's a grace period of up to 30 days in which you can renew. Please note, if you renew during this time, the new time period will start after your original deadline, not from the date when you renew.

Q. Can I renew early?
A. Yes, you can renew at any time during the time period when the renewal is active. When doing so, a year or three—depending on the renewal purchased, will be added to the end of the time period.

Q. What happens if I don't renew and the grace period has elapsed?
A. If you choose not to renew, you will continue to have access to the version of Sibelius you last had access to under your plan. The downloads in your Avid Account will remain the same. If you wish to get current after that, you can do so for $199 (until Jan 2017 where the price will go up to $299), or for $89 if you are in full-time education.

Q. I don't have Sibelius 8 yet, so how do I upgrade?
A. You can buy an upgrade directly through the Avid webstore or from one of our resellers. The price is just $89 until the end of June, so hurry to get the upgrade at this price before it goes up!

Q: If I updated for $89 within the next few days (before the deadline on June 30th), when would be, approximately, the earliest time that I could make use of the three-year upgrade for $199?
A: The $199 offer is only for renewing your upgrade plan, so you can upgrade at $89 now and renew for 3 years for $199 when your plan is up for renewal in a year's time.

Q: I understand that my Sibelius 7 will stay fully functional after the upgrade. But how does this work with the two-machine-limit
A: Your Sibelius 7 and 8 licenses will be independent, but linked, so you can have 3 activations in total and you can choose how you use these. Online deactivation and activation should make this easy to move your license from one computer to another. We have relaxed these rules on a case-by-case basis, so get in touch with the support team if you really do need Sibelius 7 and 8 installed and activated one two separate machines.

Q: Can someone who's already paid $89 for Sibelius 8 convert to the three-year deal by paying the difference?
A: You can't convert to a 3 year deal I'm afraid, but when you come to renew you can do so for 3 years.

Q: I have had my Sibelius 8's for a year now. So if I elect I can renew my 8's to the three year deal if I chose to?
A: Yes indeed. You'll see the 3-year option in your account at https://my.avid.com/products or you can buy a 3-year renewal from a reseller.

That's quite a good discount for three years, $199 instead of 3 x $89 = $267. Hard luck on anyone who's already bought in to Sibelius 8.

Why so?
Just means I'll get three years out from my initial purchase of Sibelius 8 last year. Now to play the devils questioner, why not a two year plan also? Is Avid fighting back against the forthcoming "That Notation Application we dare not speak its name?" I'll probably just go with another year.

Not quite sure I understand your math! And why shouldn't we say "Dorico"?

Hi Sam--I dont quite understand this--why does it seem that ONLY the long time loyal users of Sib are to be "punished" if they dont subscribe--or can't--now, by June 30?

And why do educational people escape this "punishment" payment?

Is it because they presumably make less money than the norm? (as do ALL of us on disability, low fixed income, Soc Security, small pensions, etc?)

Or is it because AVID doesn't want to mess with or alienate its education market (as opposed to alienating and messing with ALL the rest of us facing this punishment payment?)

IMHO this really isnt fair, Sam..

Thanks Bob

Thx Sam,

Pls let us know when auto-renew is available, I would like not to worry about manual renewal at all.

3 yrs @ $199 = $66.33/yr as opposed to $89/yr. I may take advantage of that . . . thank you!

For my money I think this 3 yr plan MOST unwise for most users unless one MUST have Sib 8 and all its updates for work, etc----

you save the princely sum of about 2 bucks a month, but who knows what the state of the notation program market will be at that time--specifically, but not limited to Dorico?

And the free programs, like Musescore, and the ones like Reaper, etc?

And Finale, Notion etc?

Saddling oneself with AVID for THREE years might be the unwisest thing Ive heard so far, in this whole subscription mess.

And yes, YMMV, and just my 2 cents.

Thanks Bob

PS And as one user pointed out in the past--who even knows if AVID will still be around at that time, with its stock problems, to provide the program itself, and support, etc?

No need to over-dramatise. It's not a marriage with the threat of alimony and a property settlement. It's getting three years of Sibelius for the price of four full tanks of petrol rather than five.

No need to falsely criticize, and try and start trouble-- no one called it a marriage, or anything of the like.

And talk about over dramatizing.."marriage, alimony, property settlement"??

And I stand by my post--and please feel free with your gassed up car to sign up for 3 years.

Thanks Bob

@Sam: I might be a bit dense, but if you would clarify for me, please: if I updated for $89 within the next few days (before the deadline on June 30th), when would be, approximately, the earliest time that I could make use of the three-year upgrade for $199?

Also, I understand that my Sibelius 7 will stay fully functional after the upgrade. But how does this work with the two-machine-limit? Does it apply for each version separately? Can I have a copy of 7 and 8 on each of my two computers? Could I, purely as an example for better understanding, have Sibelius running on four machines, as long as two copies are Version 7 and the two other ones Version 8? Or could I register maximally two instances, regardless of version?

Thanks,

Alex

Yes, thats a good point. I took the announcement as a straightforward choice of support plans, with a discount for buying three years. But, reading literally, we can only have three years at $199 AFTER first buying one year at $89? Seems a bit odd?

If this WAS a misprint, can someone who's already paid $89 for Sibelius 8 convert to the three-year deal by paying the difference?

Hi Alex,

> if I updated for $89 within the next few days (before the deadline on June 30th), when would be, approximately, the earliest time that I could make use of the three-year upgrade for $199?

The $199 offer is only for renewing your upgrade plan, so you can upgrade at $89 now and renew for 3 years for $199 when your plan is up for renewal in a year's time.

> Also, I understand that my Sibelius 7 will stay fully functional after the upgrade. But how does this work with the two-machine-limit?

Your Sibelius 7 and 8 licenses will be independent, but linked, so you can have 3 activations in total and you can choose how you use these. Online deactivation and activation should make this easy to move your license from one computer to another. We have relaxed these rules on a case-by-case basis, so get in touch with the support team if you really do need Sibelius 7 and 8 installed and activated one two separate machines.

Hi Laurence,

> can someone who's already paid $89 for Sibelius 8 convert to the three-year deal by paying the difference?

You can't convert to a 3 year deal I'm afraid, but when you come to renew you can do so for 3 years.

I have had my Sibelius 8's for a year now (June 19th, and 26th 2015 respectively). So if I elect I can renew my 8's to the three year deal if I chose to?

Hi Sam--Thanks for the clarification.

But the logic of it escapes me--wouldnt it have been better to offer the 3 year reduced price NOW, with the deadline approaching and have a guaranteed income for that longer time instead of just one year?

Sure itd be a very slight difference in $$$ but the way youre doing it, in a years time, instead of 3, people will be evaluating whether to renew or not, and other notation programs will have really progressed by then.

Just my thoughts--I had erroneously thought, like some that it was being offered now, and not after the first year.

Thanks Bob

Yes indeed. You'll see the 3-year option in your account at https://my.avid.com/products or you can buy a 3-year renewal from a reseller.

Bob - with only a month to go, we weren't able to set up a 3-year upgrade that would have had enough time to successfully run in the reseller channel. We are, however, planning 3-year upgrades beyond June that will allow users to get current with a similar discount to the multi-year renewal. Details of these will be announced in due course.

I have no wish to download Sibelius 8, but will pay the annual subscription for a while, just to keep on board in case any upgrades are worth it.

Is it possible to pay a subscription without downloading v8? As this version does not appear on my Avid account, there seems to be no way to pay the subscription.....

I cannot see the sense, from a business point of view let alone from the users point of view, of enforcing what is essentially a substantial penalty for missing the one month renewal deadline on 8.x versions.

If I don't pay for the renewal, then it is fair that I should be stuck with my current version and be unable to download any more upgrades, but if I then pay the renewal fee retrospectively, then I should be able to catch up. You will then retain a satisfied customer rather than lose an angry customer who is more likely to jump ship. At least, the one month grace period is not long enough. If you extended it to a year, that would be more reasonable.

I say this on behalf of the many people who, at some time in the future, will unwittingly miss the deadline, knowing that I might well be one of them for reaons I cannot predict.

Hi Philip S,

Renewals are only available to those who have bought or upgraded to Sib 8. You can upgrade from our webstore or from a reseller. You'll then have Sib 8 and a year of upgrades and have the Sibelius 8 downloads in your account (8.3 today and 8.4 in the near future etc.).

Hi Philip J,

Right now, the grace period is a month, but we have considered running this for longer, to allow people to get back on board if they miss this. I'll bring this up again with the other Product Managers and see if this is something we can re-visit. Thanks for the feedback!

The penalty for late renewal is gradually reducing. It's reached zero for educational users, who now seem to have an even better deal than under the old system, if they jump in and out every two years. Why does there have to be one at all?

THOU ART NOT FALSE,
BUT THOU ART FICKLE

By
Lord Byron

Thou are not false, but thou art fickle,

To those thyself so fondly sought:

The tears that thou hast forced to trickle

Are doubly bitter from that thought:

'Tis this which breaks the heart thou greivest,

Too well thou lov'st --- too soon thou leavest.

The wholly false the heart despises,

And spurns deceiver and deceit;

But she who not a thought disguises,

Whose love is as sincere as sweet, ---

When she can change who loved so truly,

It feels what mine has felt so newly.

To dream of joy and wake to sorrow

Is doom'd to all who love or live;

And if, when conscious on the morrow,

We scarce our fancy can forgive,

That cheated us in slumber only,

To leave the waking soul more lonely,

What must they feel whom no false vision,

But truest, tenderest passion warm'd ?

Sincere, but swift in sad transition;

As if a dream alone had charm'd ?

Ah ! sure such grief is fancy's scheming.

And all thy change can be but dreaming !

ok i have a question, i have just bought sibelius 8, one year support, i now get the option to renew for 3 years. it shows 3-Year Upgrade and Support Plan Renewal for Sibelius
GBP 154.8/yr. Surely this should show /3yr at end? I'm taking it that you pay a one off fee of 154.80 giving a saving of 62 pounds.

I also take it that i couldn't have bought this as my first subscription because if possible i am more interested in paying the 154.80 for 3 years than buying one year and then buying 3 later if that makes sense? If its possible, to buy 3 years from the offset, I MAY be interested in settling the difference if it is an option, thanks in advance.

The three-year option is available only to those renewing after their first (1-year) contract has expired. The three-year option is not available to those who are upgrading to Sibelius 8 from an earlier version, or purchasing Sibelius for the first time.

Just wasted an hour of my time trying to upgrade to Sibelius 8. Salesforce gave me a Single Sign On Error and asked me to check for an invalid assertion in the SAML Assertion Validator. I mean, what? Then I found an Order Support form. Filled it in and was redirected to a Site Map. If this is the level of Avid's attention to detail, it's no wonder that their shares are tanking. Totally pissed off and really do not enjoy visiting the Sibelius part of their web site, one reason that I've procrastinated upgrading my version of Sibelius. Can't wait for Dorico.

I won't be able to make the upgrade deadline this year. I'm sort of with Bob on this one. There are those who have many other responsibilities and cannot continually enrich a company being "punished" "penalized" after so many years of loyal support to AVID.

I know I said AVID need money in order to develop the software, but after a really disappointing first year, I am weary to pay for another year and still receive sub standard features. At least, If I could see what happens the next few months, I would conciser joining back in if the updates are worth it. But to charge $299! HALF the price of the full version just for skipping a month, is in my opinion pathetic. We should be able to join, skip, join, skip on a yearly basis because people might have certain more important commitments one year but could be able to join back in the next. But $200!! I don't believe this greed. :-( And this treatment against loyal old timers!

I have had several failures with the Application Manager recently; and the support extension.

But I've also been impressed with the way in which Avid support (thank you Sam; thank you Alvin!) have handled them. Emails sent on Holidays, quick and efficient responses; staff following up and following through with assurances that they're still working on things.

Not to mention the way in which people here spring in to help all the time :-)

Meanwhile Sibelius 8 just goes on getting better and better!

Avid's is a complex operation with ambitious systems in place. Things inevitably go wrong. But I have little doubt that there's a committed team of gifted individuals working hard to make the experience as productive as possible for us!

I was thinking of renewing it for 3 years, but instead of $199 (about £154), it seems to be asking me for £202.80 (over $260!). This is surely wrong - or am I being charged a penalty for missing the deadline (I thought we were being given 30 days' grace!)

In European currencies, Avid's prices are legally obliged to include VAT, which is currently 20% in the UK. In the US, Avid's prices are quoted exclusive of any relevant taxes.

Then there's the usual currency exchange charge which American companies make non-USD customers pay.

£202.80 is still less than 3 annual subscriptions, is it not?

That's true - but it was a bit of a shock to find it would cost more pounds than dollars - though I know our £ has been sinking fast! However, thanks for the VAT explanation, Robin - though even with 20% added on it should have, by my calculation, come to no more than £185. Someone's ripping off the Brits as usual, I fear!

Hi Gordon:

I believe - but am not 100% sure - that the prices are set in US dollars, and then what you pay in UK pounds is whatever the exchange rates dictates, which may vary from day to day. Sam can correct me if I am wrong.

If you find 200 pounds a bit too step, you might consider a one year extension. In terms of "what's the best value", you should also consider your average return on investment. If, for example, your return is 15%, it might make more sense to just renew annually instead of paying for three years in advance.

[edited - hope this is clearer now]

Sorry, Peter, I don't quite understand your last point. What do you mean by 'renew everything instead of paying up in advance'? I thought there was only one option open to me - to renew at the going rate - if I wish to receive any further updates or support.

In complete despair. Bought an upgrade yesterday for Sibelius 6 Student (£150), can't download it, none of the instructions fit what I see on the screen nor does AVID recognise any of my serial or order numbers.

None of the phone lines offer any live human, however long you wait; as a last resort, buy a single UK phone consultation - £20! - and the phone help line doesn't recognise the ASC code.

I am on a PC with Windows 7.

Can someone please help me? alewebb@gmail.com

Here's an interesting twist. Not only does the phone helpline not recognise my ASC - the only reason I bought it was to get phone help - the online contact form doesn't work either. When you go to http://avid.force.com/Support/cc_avid_onlinecontactusform
it says there is an error in your message, 'please select a product' - but there is no window in which to select a product, so the message won't send. Another catch 22, genius.

Hi Gordon,

Indeed, the options to you are in your account at https://my.avid.com/products. You're currently in your 30-day grace period, which is why it says 'Expired' but you can still renew at the regular prices.

Being a US company, we set the prices in USD then convert to foreign currencies and add VAT or GST as needed for each country.

Thanks for your reply, Sam.
I'm still a little confused. The current exchange rate for $199 is £154.54. So if we add on VAT @ 20% this comes to £185.45. So why am I being asked for £202.80?
As a supplementary question, let's say I decide not to renew within the grace period. What would my options be in the future if I decided I did want to opt back in to ongoing support?

@Gordon: sorry, my post was a bit garbled. I meant to say that you have the option to choose between

a. renewing per year and
b. renewing for 3 years at once

Or that was the cast the last time I checked. I tried just now but there's a privacy error on the Avid website (? what's that all about).

This is what I purchased today, July 16th 2017:

Sibelius Upgrades and Trade-ups

-- Sibelius Upgrade inc. 1 year of upgrades
SKU: 9513-30360-00

-- Standard-Support für Sibelius
SKU: 0540-30540-13

I've been billed € 166.01 today.
So what am I eligible for with this? I just cannot find out.
I had hoped to have access to Sibelius 8.6b with this purchase.

Thanks, Ingrid,
what do you play by "checking my system", please?
Can I pm you about email address? Wouldn't wish to make my email publicly known.
Seems I have solved the "riddle". I had overseen that I have to enter my existing System ID in the page "Products" in "my account". Now I see all I need to see. Sorry about my mistake.
Now the question: When having downloaded the Sib.8.6 file, and properly installed, will that be the demo version for which I have to buy a new activation key? Or is that key already somewhere in that .zip file, and applying it, I will have Sib.8.6 as a full new version?

Maybe you can tell me if there is some overview what are the main differences between Sib. 7.5, and 8.6? And SibSounds 7.0, and 7.5?
More instruments? Better quality (I remember the Flugelhorn with that overdone vibrato, will I be able to "tame" that to a reasonable level)?

Thankx.

Hi @MadMusicologist I was going to check if you have an open case with us so that we could assist you further. If you have already resolved your issue, that is good to hear.

> When having downloaded the Sib.8.6 file, and properly installed, will that be the demo version for which I have to buy a new activation key? Or is that key already somewhere in that .zip file, and applying it, I will have Sib.8.6 as a full new version?

Did you download a 30-day trial version of Sibelius 8.6 from our website or did you avail any of our subscription plans?
If you are planning on availing any of our subscription plans, you will definitely have to get a new set of activation codes as the one "provided" with the 30-day trial is only a "temporary" license and will be terminated after 30-days.
Here's a detailed pdf file that lists all features of all Sibelius 8.0 versions (until 8.5). Also includes the prices for subscription and/or upgrade options.

https://www.avid.com/~/media/avid/files/support-pdf/resources-pdf/whats-new-in-sibelius.pdf

This is an overview of Sibelius 8.6. Introduces Magnetic Glissandi lines, and fixes a whole host of bugs, whilst improving Sibelius' overall stability. Click the link below for more information.

I've also added this link so that you can contact us.

>Maybe you can tell me if there is some overview what are the main differences between Sib. 7.5, and 8.6? And SibSounds 7.0, and 7.5?

This is a link from an old forum discussion on Sibelius 7.5. Please refer to this to get an overview of Sibelius 7.5
http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=655815&groupid=3&&guest=1

Main features of Sibelius Sounds 7 include.

Sibelius 7 Sounds: uses the full library, and recommended for computers running 64-bit
operating systems with at least 4GB RAM
 Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite): uses cut-down versions of the sounds, and recommended for
computers running a 32-bit operating system or with less than 4GB RAM
 Sibelius 7 Sounds (Chamber): uses the full library, but defaults ensemble strings to use
the provided chamber sounds rather than the full ensemble sounds
 Sibelius 7 Sounds (Jazz): uses the full library, but defaults to wind and brass to use the
patches that include jazz techniques such as doits, falls, mutes, etc.

There really isn't much of a difference between Sibelius Sounds 7 and 7.5 except for the addition of the Bass Clarinet Patch.
Please refer to this forum link for details. As it was also discussed here before.

Hi Ingrid,
I yesterday downloaded Sib 8.6 from my account site, after having resoved the issue mentioned before, so it should not be the trial version file, but - I hope - "the real one".
Tonight I hope to grab the instruments file, as I learned it should work with the current Sibelius version as well as with Sibelius 7.5, right?
When I open a file created in Sib 7.5, with Sib. 86., will I be able to open it in 7.5 again in case I should have unexpectedly so many errors or issues that I decide to continue with the older version?
In case you have an answer for this in any FAQ, just place the referring link here. Thankx.
I would deinstall Sib 7.5 only after getting so familiar with 8.6 that I see no more necessity to run the older version parallel to the new one. I think I should be able to decide in the next 30 days then...

That is great! If it came from your MyAvid Account, then yeah that is definitely the real thing.
Yes the instruments file should work fine with your current Sibelius version and Sibelius 7.5.

>When I open a file created in Sib 7.5, with Sib. 86., will I be able to open it in 7.5 again in case I should have unexpectedly so many errors or issues that I decide to continue with the older version?

Yes you can do that and you may have to do some file conversions if you were to use exported Sibelius 7.5 files so that you could use it on Sibelius 8.6 (or vice-versa)

>I would deinstall Sib 7.5 only after getting so familiar with 8.6 that I see no more necessity to run the older version parallel to the new one. I think I should be able to decide in the next 30 days then...

Actually, you can run both versions of your Sibelius at the same time on one computer. Just FYI.

Let me know if you run into problems.

One more question, please:
What will be the best procedure about the Sibelius Sounds file?
If I just unpack it to the folder where I have placed the sounds 7.0, I expect Windows will ask if I intend to overwrite the existing file, or "integrate a folder to an exsisting one".
Would you recommend that I create a new directory where I can unpack the zipped file to?
And what about the "old" sounds then? Can I delete them once the new sounds are unpacked?
I'd wish that both Sibelius versins can use the sounds alternatively, until I find that I continue with Sib 8.6 alone, but having twice the sounds would be awkward and the free disk space is getting small....
Thankx.

No. The downloaded .zip file contains an installer package, not the sample files themselves. You will not be asked to manipulate or copy any sample files themselves.

> Would you recommend that I create a new directory where I can unpack the zipped file to?

It does not matter: you are unzipping only an installer package. You must not put it at a location at which you intend to install the sample library.

> And what about the "old" sounds then? Can I delete them once the new sounds are unpacked?

There will not be any old sounds left after you have run the sounds installer. The sounds installer will overwrite an existing active Sibelius Sounds sample library with the new one.

> I'd wish that both Sibelius versins can use the sounds alternatively,

There cannot be more than one working installation of Sibelius Sounds sample library on one PC. Only one such installation will be known to Sibelius, and it will be used by all versions of Sibelius from 7.0 upwards.

Hi there,

I'm on 7.5 and thinking of upgrading to the latest sib version.

I will need to go to playback configurations etc and paste these into the new sibelius 8 before I delete sib 7.5 from my computer programs area. Is this all I'd need to do? I haven't done and upgrade for a while, so I don't want to delete 7.5 and lose valuable work.

Bill - great! Application Manager should be responding to any changes to the upgrade plan and silently update the license info. If this doesn't happen automatically, you can simply deactivate Sibelius and reactivate. This will pull the new plan dates too.

Glad you're up and running now anyway.
