Finale vs Sibelius
Posted by Peter Jacobs - 26 May 11:00PM
Looks like Finale is able to directly import off files (according to their advertising). Any plans on Sibelius doing that?

You mean, import of XML? Sibelius can do that too.

First of all this is a feature that they are working on for Finale. It's not yet part of the program.

It apparently will import a pdf directly. That is, you will be able to take a photo of existing sheet music, save it as a pdf, and open the pdf in Finale. By opening it, Finale scans/interprets it into a score.

Sibelius users already have this feature available to them through the use of PhotoScore.

Did Finale users not already have access to Photoscore, Lite and Ultimate?

Looking closer, they seem to be making a big fuss about being able to photograph a page rather than using a scanner. Is this new?

Interesting. I have to say that the quality is pretty impressive ... better than I have seen from Photoscore.

Compare the photo of the iPhone with the processed version in Finale. Looks pretty good, no? All you have to fix is the instrument names, and add a few lyrics.

I wonder though how it will do with multiple voices per staff ... that is the real tricky part.

I'm still skeptical of these claims. I am familiar with both Smart Score Pro X, and X2 and PhotoScore 6,7,and 8 Ultimate. While the newest SmartScore X2 pro is good, PhotoScore 7 is still the best in my opinion.

I wouldn't rely too much on a demo. After all, Neuratron seem to be able to make Audioscore work. Just not while anyone's watching. Sort of musical homeopathy.

An image is an image, however you create it. The hard part with photographing sheets of paper rather than scanning them is to make sure the camera is square-on to the paper, and a zoom lens on the camera can introduce fish-eye distortion if you don't have the camera the correct distance from the paper.

For a one-off demo like the video, you can just practice till you get it right. If you want to photograph a lot of sheets, it would be quicker and more reliable to use a camera tripod and a stand for the paper, which levels the playing field compared with just using a scanner.

I suppose it's possible the scanner software has been modified to automatically detect and correct that type of distortion, but if that was the case they would have probably showed a "distorted" photo to advertise how clever it was.

As a general rule can't deduce much from a pre-recorded software demo, because nobody in their right mind would publish a demo that doesn't work! At best, you can read between the lines and guess what the software can't do. (So I wonder why they cut off that Finale demo half way through the playback - just before a fistful of wrong notes???)

The blogger is rather desperately trying to get mileage out of the method of capturing an image, which doesn't matter much. He's dodged the issue of what happens when an image isn't read 100% correctly, or how it deals with more complex music.

Like Dorico, Finale's importation of pdf files is vaporware. It is not released yet. When it's released, it will be possible to see how well it works. Teasing is fun... if there is a payoff.
