Sib. 6.x: Windows 10
Posted by PatC - 20 May 05:05PM
My computer has just upgraded itself from Windows 7 to Windows 10 without my permission. And now I have a problem with Sibelius. When I start it, it gets as far as 'Restoring playback configuration' and then freezes. The task manager says Sibelius (32 bit) not responding.

Before I uninstall Windows 10, does anyone know how I can get Sib to start?

The first, and most likely, thing to try is to update the Windows driver for the audio output card/chip on the PC. Download and install the latest Windows 10 compatible driver from the support website of the manufacturer of the audio device.

Thanks, Robin, but after I posted my question I found that it's dead easy to revert to Windows 7. Since I didn't want Windows 10 in the first place I've uninstalled it and Sib works fine again. Sigh of relief.

(I also read that Sib 6, which I use, isn't supported in Windows 10 so reverting back was really a no-brainer.)

Your computer did actually warn you about the update, and gave you a chance to refuse it.

Sibelius 6.2 runs fine under Windows 10.

But if you want to go back to Windows 7 that's fine too.

I'm on 6.2. Maybe it would have worked if I'd updated the drivers, as Robin suggested, but I couldn't be bothered to faff about.

As for being warned, a window popped up, yet another invitation to upgrade. I was in the middle of something so I didn't pay much attention but simply clicked on the cross in the top corner to close the window and my machine immediately shut down and then started installing Windows 10. I felt it best to continue rather than cancel the update half way through which would have probably given me more problems.

Anyway, all is fine now I've got rid of it.

There is a simple and free tool "...to disable Windows 10 upgrade and recover up to 6GB of disk space"

at http://win10wiwi.com

I've been using it to postpone the update (which I will eventually do) to the precise point of my choosing, without having the pop-up interruptions from Big Brother Microsoft.

I'm aware there are other tools available that claim to prevent Windows updating itself.

Windows 10 is now well established. Really, anyone who's GOING to install it has had ample opportunity to pick a convenient moment (ok, a convenient afternoon).

It's interesting (from a psychological rather than technical point of view!) that people are quite happy to trust some random bit of software from the internet, rather than a big company that they have been told (mostly by random people on the internet!) is "evil".

Either that web page is blatantly inventing random numbers when it claims how many times it has been run in the last 24 hours, or else it is phoning home an unknown amount of private information from every person who runs it.

I wouldn't touch something like that with a barge pole either way. Microsoft still actually have a reputation to lose by screwing up big time. Those guys with a random-looking address and phone number that says it's in France (but who knows?) could be anybody.

I should have expected that scorn would be poured and should have kept quiet. OK, I must be incredibly naive and potentially criminally stupid. Actually, I thought I was being helpful.

It has worked for me with no nasty effects I'm aware of.

And it wasn't "random".

Windows 10 is not "just another upgrade." It gathers personal data, so now MS will know everything about you just like Apple and Google already do. You can turn those internal functions off, but only if you are technically competent, willing to dig deep, and willing to give up the real features they've bundled with the privacy-busting features.

Win10 is also Microsoft's platform for transitioning to "Windows as a service." This is techspeak for "pay me every month or your computer might stop working." Just as "the Cloud" is techspeak for "rent my server, or you may lose access to your files." It's the latest exciting innovation from the software industry.

Unfortunately, MS, Adobe, Apple, and (ahem) Avid are pushing this model. This is why some of us are exploring open source software.

In my view, MS' aggressive use of Windows Update to push Win10 on you whether you like it or not, is unconscionable.

From what I understand, the personal data grab has been back ported to Windows 7 and 8. But considering you really can't hide from Big Brother, whether he wears the colors of MS, Google, Apple, the NSA, etc etc anyway, I'm not sure how much it matters to try. My main objection to the Windows fiasco is the above mentioned transition to WAAS. I will not pay a subscription to access an operating system.

Open source, while not without its flaws, is the way to go. Been Windows free five years now and don't miss it one bit.

A quick addendum to the upgrade issue - Microsoft have indeed changed things so that clicking on the cross to close the window defaults to having accepted. Sneaky and irresponsible. However there's a 'click here' option in the window which you need to do in order to stop the upgrade from happening.

Yeah - desperate and revolting behavior.

But then again, no home user is ever forced to install or use Windows...
