Creating a single treble-staff measure of non-standard time signature (i.e. 23/8 or just about any other entry (i.e. 14/4 etc.) and then trying to manually insert notes via the keypad - causes an immediate "Unhandled error" and crashes the program.
I'm using the newest version 8.3 on Windows 7 (64-bit)
I get a "unhandled error" anytime I try to input (any) note from the keypad (using mouse) onto the staff.
This does NOT, and never did happen in SIbelius 7.5. I have reverted back to 7.5 for the time being.
I'd say, for me, this is a serious issue. I can't seem to figure out what's going on.
Just to expand.... apparently, I cannot use Sibelius 8.3. Even on an existing piece, anytime I try to put any note on any staff, the program crashes....!!! I'll provide any answer you need, but forgive me for being abrupt - I'm quite upset because its totally unusable.
Robin,
I've attached a jpg showing both of these dialog boxes.
As a note, I'm only using the standard General Midi Sounds that MS provides. No other instruments are being used.
-Thanks
Ok.... I think I may have solved the problem: On the Audio Engine dialog I checked the "Use virtual instruments and effects..." tick box.
I then selected MS Sound Mapper MME. After restarting Sibelius, I did not experience the problem. If you can concur that this happens to you as well, then I know this was it. It would, however, be helpful to warn users that an error can occur if certain boxes are left unchecked. Also, the "unhandled error" did not provide any way of finding out more about the error.
I think the issue was that there was no output destination selected for the MIDI sounds. Every a note is entered, Sibelius tries to play the note, so that you hear the pitch. In the absence of any destination, it appears that Sibelius just crashed.

Sibelius 8.3/7.5.1/7.1.3/6.2/5.2.5, PhotoScore Ult 8.0.4, Dolet 6.6 for Sibelius, Windows 8.1/10 64-bit 16GB.
The bug is: if you uncheck the "Use virtual instruments and effects" checkbox then Sibelius will crash when you attempt any operation that involves playback (inputting notes etc). Actually this bug has been around for a long time, but it seems to have come up a lot recently - funny how these things seem to come in waves!
For now, please just leave that box checked, and you should be fine. In the future we'll provide a proper fix.
There have been other reports of Unexpected Error crashes that do not involve playback. Are they caused by the same thing? Is the workaround of being sure to set up the "Use virtual instruments and effects" checkbox going to prevent this crash in all the reported cases? Or are these unrelated problems?

An experienced user of Sibelius. Sib 1.2 - 8, Windows 7 Pro SP 1 64 bit, 8 G RAM. Year 2016.
Spot on; we don't know whether they're caused by the same thing yet.
In my experience, having "Use virtual instruments and effects" unchecked results in an instant crash, with no message at all.
My suspicion at the moment is that there are at least two problems here. The virtual instruments issue is fixed in house. We fixed at least one Unhandled Error problem in Sib 8.2. We need more information on the other Unhandled errors that users have reported.
