Steinberg’s New Music Notation Application: A Leap for Professional Score Preparation Almi Hall

Daniel Spreadbury, Product Marketing Manager, Steinberg Media Technologies

This session will be the world’s first public presentation of Steinberg’s in‐development scoring application. Music notation software is widely used by music librarians, and there are two mature and full‐featured applications already available. Find out how Steinberg’s new application, built from scratch by the world’s most experienced scoring software development team, is going to provide the next big leap in tools for score preparation.

All the very best is wished to Daniel and team on this most auspicious occassion!

Thanks Bob

PS Please see large attachment for all events related to Sibelius, Finale, and Staffpad, all presented by Philip Rothman. Good luck with your presentations Philip!

Good to see continuing progress. But, before anyone gets TOO excited, note this is a "presentation of Steinberg’s in‐development scoring application" not a release announcement.

It would have been great fun if Steinberg's program was released just before our subscription deadline. But this isn't an announcement of such.

This presentation, while technically public, will directly reach a relatively few individuals who are either members of MOLA or who have registered themselves and paid a fair amount to go to the conference. I'm not minimising the significance of it, but it would be nice if something more accessible to the wider potential clientele appears before too long.

I had toyed with the idea that Steinberg might actually release something by the end of June (as Laurence says), but I now think that what is more likely is that we can see the beginning of a carefully graded series of "teasers". We've had Daniels's presentations to some publishers in New York on October 15th 2015, to arrangers/orchestrators in Los Angeles in mid-January, and now the latest demo mid-May. If there's a pattern, it's every few months that something comes out. Perhaps July or August will be the time to get excited again - maybe even before that.

Or perhaps they're all getting the same presentation. Development seems to have reached the stage where there's a fair idea of program design, and animations can be shown of how things WILL work, when implemented.

Read the section headed "Building out Engrave mode" in:
http://blog.steinberg.net/2016/03/development-diary-part-13/#more-1226

If we're going to amuse ourselves by "reading between the lines", it's not at all clear how far Write Mode (is that different to "add new flows"?) has progressed, but it seems clear that Engrave Mode still has some way to go.

Or we could be being fed cheeky misinformation, disguising the reality of an imminent full release!

They would appear to still have a lot to do. I *seriously* doubt they are going to jam in a release to beat out July 1 when Sibelius users in droves will be going off subscription.

It will be released when it is ready. I can't see them risking a premature and buggy initial release. (My opinion only, of course, but I spent a lot of time with those guys in the past).

I think this is written out of a sincere desire many of us share..WE want to see it, and try it out, too, for ourselves:) And I couldn't agree more with that sentiment!

I am constantly amazed at the number of people who have actually done this and the COMPLETELY unanimous, positive, and glowing verdict I keep hearing-- ie, basically, "its the BEST and will blow Sib and Fin right out of the water". This is honestly what I keep hearing, just about word for word, from every person I speak to, or see writing about it.

And the last two I spoke at length online to--both of whom I had no idea had seen it, and tried it, and the depth to which one had actually contributed ideas to--would not speak specifics, and rightfully so--but one has completely "severed ties" with AVID, and has removed any trace of them, or Sib "off their machines", and are using another program until the actual release; and the other has "mothballed" their present computers, to keep them at their present OS so their Sib 7 keeps running, along with NotePerformer.

>I had toyed with the idea that Steinberg might actually release something by the end of June

I think many of us hoped this might happen, in light of the impending subscription deadline, but my honest opinion is that it probably wont happen now, but is in the very near foreseeable future, instead of it just being something we keep reading about.

And its to our advantage that Philip Rothman will be at this conference, so Im sure we'll see a fair and complete write up of whats shown.

Again, all the best to Daniel and team-its been a long hard and difficult road from being fired here by AVID to designing and creating a completely new program, from scratch.

Kudos also to Yamaha/Steinberg for hiring them all, and having the foresight to have this new app created.

Thanks Bob

PS With this program probably not being released at this time, it leaves many with the dilemma of whether to subscribe or not, and just keep using whatever version of Sib they're at, until Steinberg is released and they become proficient on it.

Its a very real problem, and decision to be made.

Chris' more complete sentence was:

"I had toyed with the idea that Steinberg might actually release something by the end of June.."

It was more hopeful than anything else, at least thats how I read it.

>How could anyone think that who been reading the blog? There's still the whole MIDI/Audio side to the application to be done.
>

IIRC the last blog was the third week of March, about 6 weeks ago--is there any information that might show that no progress has been made on this in those six weeks?

And I note that the midi part and playback part is going to be provided for and is already much established and in existence for Cubase, another of Steinberg's programs, and just needs to be hooked up with the rest of Daniel and team's program.

At this point in time, as the application is really coming together, 6 weeks seems like a long time to me.

Then again maybe Im just like Chris' statement..hopeful:)

Thanks Bob

So Steinberg hired the Sibelius team to write a competitor to Cubase? I don't think so - not unless Steinberg's brains are as scrambled as Daniel's former employers' seem to be.

> At this point in time, as the application is really coming together, 6 weeks seems like a long time to me.

Maybe you never worked in software development, but it's a well known fact that every application is "90% complete" from the day after the project starts until the day after it's just been released ;)

YIKES!! And no I never worked in software development--

and these stories are all very eye opening and entertaining, but I think those who know Daniel et al couldnt see them as possibly applying to them and their new application, in the least.

At least *I* can't:) YMMV, of course.

It's my belief that Steinberg will eventually get its moneys worth out of Daniel and team. But it will take years to replace/supplant in the market Sibelius and Finale.
This is a market that is in a large part with education in High School and College.

"... it will take years to replace/supplant in the market Sibelius and Finale."

You may well be right. However, it all depends on exactly how much better than its competitors Steinberg's program will be.

If it really is streets ahead - the game-changer that has been claimed - it could all be over sooner rather than later.

If it's seen as only marginally better, then sheer inertia (financial considerations, reluctance to learn a new program etc.) will slow the process of change-over.

The only sector in which composers seem to be making any money at the moment is film scoring and its various offshoots. A notation-based music-to-picture production system could really knock the market sideways.

Coming from the other direction, it will be interesting to see how Steinberg caters for non-standard notations - and how stubbornly the market will insist that EVERYTHING they put on the page must play back!

Sadly, I have a sneaking suspicion that though I will doubtless be impressed by the Steinberg product, and I might even buy it, I won't NEED it.

The only thing I NEED at the moment is something that plays like my Kurzweil PC3X but weighs half as much. Gigging is getting rather hard on my back.

I have no idea how Steinberg will evaluate "its money's worth", but I doubt the new product will ever replace/supplant Sibelius and Finale. It doesn't have to. It just needs the customers. Most initial buyers of the Steinberg product will also have Sibelius and/or Finale and will continue using those products as they get familiar with the Steinberg product (and maybe afterwards).

MOLA 2016 Conference report, day 1

http://www.sibeliusblog.com/

"(tomorrow) The day begins with Daniel’s 90-minute demonstration of the new Steinberg software to all attendees. Many readers have inquired about a video of the event or other real-time reporting. If time allows I will try to post a brief summary of audience reaction tomorrow as soon as possible. However, at the request of Steinberg, I won’t be sharing details about the program itself until Steinberg officially announces it. The good news is that you won’t have to wait long for that — details about the product, including its name, will be unveiled this coming Tuesday, May 17. At that time we’ll have more coverage."

Thanks Bob

That's very good news. Given that Daniel Spreadbury and some of his developers from Sibelius are involved, I've got a feeling that this Steinberg application will be a pretty excellent one, next to Sibelius and Finale.

Hopefully, I might use the Steinberg application along with Sibelius. Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing what the Steinberg application is about this upcoming Tuesday, since there are possibly non-disclosure agreements involved.

So it isn't really going much more public today than at previous closed-group presentations. But on Tuesday we're expecting a brochure.

Good. It's all progress. But let's not OVER-react.

I think the name will be Notey McNoteFace. Any other suggestions?

Perhaps Steinberg will resuscitate the name MasterScore, from an earlier offering in this market for Atari ST. It was quite expensive to buy, but was never developed. Here's my dongle. I wonder if there will be an upgrade deal?

I worry that "It was quite expensive" may apply to this new product, too. If it is really as much a step up from Sibelius and Finale as we have been told it may be priced in kind - a professional price for a professional product.

Its very interesting the amount of excitement, and anticipation this very important first public demonstration at MOLA, today, and Tuesdays announcement are generating throughout the web..:)

This is an older article but one I found interesting:

http://composerjude.com/2014/01/12/why-people-matter/

"From reading Daniel’s blog, I get the sense that this new program will be great, if not just a capable application. Honestly, in the last several years, Finale and Sibelius have been moving toward each other and which program one chooses seems arbitrary. When I do switch over to this as-of-yet-named scoring software, I’ll have to deal with the learning curve all over again. It’ll probably take me about a year to become an expert, but what I will get with this new program is a dedicated group of developers committed to making the best program possible by engaging the community and responding to their wants and needs. In essence, I get the people involved, and that so far, has proven to be the most valuable part."

Many, many--if not all of those who were here when Daniel and team were fired, and subsequently picked up en masse by Steinberg--and this application was announced--all feel a special kinship, connection, and loyalty with them and the application itself ,and share a personal joy and satisfaction seeing it all come to fruition.

WAY TO GO, TEAM!!

Thanks Bob

Well, we know that won't make the cut, any more than "Boaty McBoatface" did.

How about "Sir Daniel Spreadbury"?

PS Also its not a very well known fact but "NoteyMcNoteFace" is a plugin that makes happy faces on whole notes...and yes, its owned by AVID, and its rumored to be released as a feature of Sib 8.4. Now you can color notes and draw happy faces ALL over your score with Sibelius..LOL:)

Better that, than a professional price for an amateur product. (I can't possibly think which one I mean....) The price level for very good non-professional notation software is now "free and open source," and it's not likely to rise any time soon.

From Philip Rothman's blog:

http://www.sibeliusblog.com/meta/mola-2016-conference-report-day-2/

"Earlier this morning, Steinberg product marketing manager Daniel Spreadbury delivered a 90-minute presentation to delegates and other attendees entitled: “Steinberg’s New Scoring Software: A Leap for Professional Score Preparation.”

The presentation, described as the “world’s first public presentation of Steinberg’s in-development scoring application…built by the world’s most experienced scoring software development team,” was an overview of the software intended to be a competitor to long-established commercial products such as Sibelius and Finale.

Tony Rickard, music library manager for the Royal Opera House and current MOLA president, introduced Daniel and called the presentation “quite a coup for MOLA.”

In Daniel’s introduction to the software, he rhetorically asked: “Does the world really need another professional scoring program? We hope the answer is ‘yes’.” He also said that he and the development team have been “incredibly lucky – Steinberg have been patient and supportive” in the more than three years that the program has been under development.

During the presentation, Daniel covered all major aspects of the software’s engraving features, including the five modes of the program: Setup, Write, Engrave, Play, and Print. Those that follow Daniel’s blog will be familiar with his comparison of Steinberg’s output compared to other products, like when describing spacing algorithms.

As a way of illustrating the program’s devotion to the intricacies of music engraving rules, Daniel said, “We had one developer work on just ties for nearly a year,” Daniel said to an amused and appreciative audience. “I’m certain that you’ll be making much fewer manual adjustments to ties in our program than in other programs.”

The program will have a huge number of tweakable options, yet Daniel said that “we wanted to make the default output really beautiful. Input and editing is much more flexible than both of the other programs. You can change your mind at any point.”

Daniel opened a number of MusicXML files in the new program and showed how it handled various engraving problems inherent in different musical situations, without making any further adjustments.

As mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, Steinberg plans an official launch of the software on Tuesday, May 17, and at their request we will refrain from publishing further details about the software until that time".

Thanks Bob

I'm not sure if we should be bemused or dismayed that a forum whose overriding mission is to assist Sibelius users should host such a long and enthusiastic thread devoted entirely to the arrival of a potential competitor. If there's any justice in this world, the consummate morons who cynically fired the original Sibelius team should now be worried sick that their inflated salaries, bonuses and dividends might suffer but I seriously doubt such obvious repercussions even touch their consciousness.

Be bemused or dismayed or whatever you feel appropriate. I believe that the best way to assist Sibelius users at the moment is to let them know that there will soon be an alternative to Sibelius - a product created by a team that has a track record of listening to the user community, helping them through problems, and incorporating user suggestions into products.

This thread would have been largely ignored except that a number of Sibelius users feel comfortable with the current state of Sibelius under Avid and are looking for an alternative. There are some members of the forum that also occasionally point Sibelius users to MuseScore, Finale and Lilypond.

This thread will almost certainly not touch the collective consciousness of Avid, but it expresses the hopes of some Sibelius users and may provide help to others.

Well, Sibelius Sounds certainly would not be usable in the Steinberg product - they are Sibelius-only. And NotePerformer is Sibelius-only unless Arne chooses to change that. But I'd really be surprised if the new product didn't support libraries using the VST interface. After all, Steinberg invented the VST interface. How easy they are to use is another matter. We will certainly find out soon.

Any sound library native to Sibelius, and provided with it--Sibelius Sounds, Sibelius Essentials can only be used within Sibelius. NotePerformer while not native to Sibelius, or provided with it, at the moment also can only be used with Sibelius though it states on its website:

http://www.noteperformer.com/?mode=support

Under Required host program:

"As for now, no other notation programs are compatible with NotePerformer."

As for all other third party sound libraries, I would honestly believe they will all be able to be used with Steinberg, but its best to wait for official word on this.

As for now we know this:

http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=696566&groupid=3&words=Halion&name=#696566

"...the program will also include a basic MIDI editor... the first edition of the new program will come with Steinberg’s Halion Sonic SE and Halion Symphonic Orchestra libraries."

In terms of the name, I have a feeling that I caught a glimpse of it in a reasonably early blog post (one of the first ones that compared some output of the New Thing with established programmes), when Daniel accidentally named an image file with what seemed to be the software name (and this image file name was very quickly altered to just 'Steinberg' afterwards). If I'm right, it's an abstract kinda name and it begins with D. Let's see...

So Chris, does that mean the Halion Sonic SE and Halion Symphonic Orchestra libraries will be bought separately or with the software, theoretically? And what score template presets would Steinberg include (such as orchestra, concert band or jazz band)? I'm just asking in general.

I can't answer that, Greg - I don't have any inside knowledge; I was just quoting what Daniel said in an interview. But my assumption was that, as the new program aims to provide good playback, among other aspirations, the sounds would be part of the package.

As for score templates, I don't think anyone outside Steinberg, or the select few who've had a demonstration, knows this.

Maybe tomorrow will reveal more.

I've been developing software for 30 years. My (not REALLY tongue in cheek) rule is take what the developer (e.g., me) says, up the unit of time by one and double the number of such units, e.g.:

"It'll take two minutes!"

It'll take four hours.

"It'll take four hours!"

It'll take eight days".

"It'll take eight days!"

It'll take 16 weeks.

You get the picture.

At this point, it starts to fall apart, as sixteen weeks is more than enough time for ALL of the business requirements to be modified, and most likely the project was ill-advised to begin with.

But the fix will just take a few minutes...

D.
