Sib. 6.x: Sib 6.2 and Upgrading OS X to Yosemite
Posted by Dave Hollinden - 10 May 11:16AM
Hello,

I used to post here a bit, but have not been around for quite some time. I run sib 6.2 at the specs in my signature. I am happy with Sib 6.2 on OS X 10.6.8, but want to upgrade to Yosemite (10.10.5) for reasons of security and support in general. And as my system has become somewhat sluggish over the years, I think I might erase my hard drive and perform a fresh install of the OS rather than an upgrade.

I'm wondering if there are things to consider with regard to Sibelius as part of a fresh install of the OS as opposed to an upgrade:

1. Should I unregister Sib 6.2 before wiping my hard disk?

2. After the new OS is in place, should I install Sib 6.0 from my original installation disk and then update to 6.2, or download the 6.2 installer directly?

3. Are there settings, etc. that I might want to back up and transfer from my current install into the new one? It seems I should back up and transfer everything in /Users/dave/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 6/. And I have some custom soundfonts in /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks. But I've generally had the impression that other particulars are stored in the Sib files and wouldn't need to be specifically transferred. If I'm missing something in this respect, please let me know.

I understand that I'll have to register Sib 6.2 via a web browser.

Thanks for any help and insights.

Dave

It may not be strictly necessary to unregister - Sibelius has an uncanny knack for recognizing computers - but it certainly won't hurt! Anyway, cock-ups in this department can always be sorted out by the Registration Support guys.

No need to install 6.0 first. Use the latest full installer available. You may find it easier to install the Sounds from your 6.0 disks (all 4 of them, remember) rather than doing the big download. Then run all applicable Sounds updaters.

Why erase the hard drive? Why not just back up (just in case) and then upgrade the mac os and let everything just work? Then you can see if upgrading the OS was all you needed to solve the sluggishness.

Well, that's a good point. I thought that after seven years of use, a clean install would help get rid of extraneous junk. But I've not really installed and uninstalled that many applications. So maybe I'll just try upgrading, and if I'm not satisfied, I can always perform the clean install.

Thanks,

Dave

Update: I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.5 six days ago and thus far I've not experienced any problems at all. Sibelius runs and plays my existing scores, My computer is still sluggish, no better or worse than before, though maybe due to different causes. I'm consistently using ~3GB of my 4GB RAM, so I'll bump up to 8GB and see if that makes a difference. And in the big picture, I can live with some sluggishness anyway.

Thanks for your input.

Thanks for reporting that Sib 6.2 is doing well on Yosemite. I think it was a very stable release.
