How do I hide empty staves at the beginning of a score?
Posted by music123 - 30 Apr 03:16AM (edited 30 Apr 03:38AM)
The "Hide Empty Staves" function won't hide empty staves on the first page of a score. I realize that normally the first page of a score shows all instruments used in the score, but I am writing an opera and want to hide all the empty vocal staves on the first page of the orchestra score, as well as in the vocal score.

The only way to do this seems to be to use the "Change Instrument" function and change the first half dozen or so of the vocal measures into No Instrument (Hidden). This works but makes showing empty measures rather cumbersome later in the score. If I choose a passage for showing empty measures all of the vocal staves are labelled "[No instrument (hidden)]" which makes it difficult to figure out which is which when there are a lot of voices involved. If this is the only way to do it, then it there a way to add a name in front of the hidden staff at the beginning of the score?

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

(I am using Sibelius 8.2 on Windows 10)

I'm having no issue hiding staves in the 1st page of a score using Hide Empty Staves.

When you use Hidden Instrument Change plugin for the 1st few bars of a piece, use it in the Part, not the Score, and it'll retain the real instrument name and won't read "[No instrument (hidden)]".

Richie:

Thanks for the very quick reply! After reading your comments I got rid of the hidden instrument bits and tried a couple of things. I'm not sure what's going on now. I have two scores which will eventually be spliced together to form the beginning of Act 5. (I haven't written the music that goes between the two parts yet.) I tried using Hide Staves in the second score (which I hadn't tried before) and it worked with absolutely no problems: the empty staves do not appear on the first page in the full score, the conductor score, or the vocal score. When I tried this again with the first score, however; it didn't work: the empty staves show up in all but the vocal score, which suggests that there might be a setting somewhere that I've messed up. It's almost 11:00 pm here so I think I'll give it up and try again tomorrow. Thanks again for your help.

OK, if you still have problems attach the score (or the 1st couple pages after COPYING the score) of the first score.

You can always use the plugin Make Pitches Constant if you're worried about copyright issues.

or download the plug-in to skies score which will randomize text and pitches and get rid of any extra versions. It was designed so you could post a score without giving anything away.

I think Bob is referring to Disguise Score plug-in (which Bob wrote - location attached).

Though I would love to see what the "to skies" plug-in does.

Use this ingenious plugin if secrecy is necessary. If not, don't. It doesn't make it EASIER to detect problems!

Problem solved! After I went to bed last night I suddenly realized what the problem was. The first thirteen measures are in 3/4 except for three of the instruments which are in 6/8. The time signature is hidden and I used text objects for the time signatures. Once I deleted the text objects attached to the empty staves, the empty staves went away.

Although I have used Sibelius for many years, this is the first time I have used this forum. I was pleasantly surprised at how many people quickly offered helpful suggestions. Thank you to all of you!
