Out Of Tune Playback
Posted by Chris Creswell - 27 Apr 02:41PM
Hello all,

When playing my scores back, occasionally they will sound out of tune. If I stop and restart the score it usually solves the problem and then it will come back randomly.
I've read posts going back about 8 years with others encountering this issue with no real solutions.

Before you ask:

There are no glissando or pitch bends in the score.
No midi commands
This happens in any score I'm working in, not often but occasionally enough to be annoying.

I'm on PC - Windows 10
Realtek sound card
Asio sound driver (maybe issue is here?)
16 GB RAM

Sibelius 8 (although it occurred the same way in 7)

Has there been any new info in regards to this issue?

C Creswell

Hi Chris,

Just a hunch: have you got a MIDI controller or something else that could be sending MIDI data to Sibelius whilst you're working on it? Perhaps an unintended function, or accidental nudge? Sibelius resets various MIDI data, including bends, when you start playback so that could explain why it magically fixes itself.

I have an M-audio key rig attached. However I never touch the pitch bend or modulation wheels on it. I have noticed that the keyboard will send midi data when I hit the keys harder, so that could be related.

Hi Chris,

That feature is called "aftertouch": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_expression#Pressure_sensitivity_or_aftertouch

It could be that the patches you're using have mapped aftertouch somehow to a pitch modulation. Again this is still a theory but it seems worth some investigation.

Try unplugging the MIDI keyboard completely, and then quit and re-launch Sibelius. If everything now plays back in tune, you have identified the culprit.

I am using an old DX-7 for input -- about as basic as it gets. I had the same out of tune problem which would sneak in midway through working on a file, even if I hand't done any note input from the keyboard, both mod and pitch wheels being in the off/neutral position. It does somehow seem to be keyboard related though. as If I disconnect the keyboard everything stays fine...

Just thought I would follow up. It is certainly the keyboard causing the issue, as often I would find pitch bend midi info on my scores.

So, since I don't use the pitch bend anyway I just opened up the chassis of the keyboard and disabled the pitch bend and modulation wheels. Haven't had any issues since.

I am experiencing the same thing with certain staves playing out of tune compared to the rest of the piece. After doing some research both in the Facebook group as well as here, I saw to try disconnecting my m-audio oxygen49 from my MacBook. I have tried this and am still getting the out of tune staff. Is there anything within the program I could check or click to blanket turn off any pitch bend info I may have inadvertently added to the score?

You could search for MIDI messages. They are hidden by default. So turn on "View Hidden Objects" and hunt for and delete any. They will start with the tilde character (~) (which hides them) and then some letters and numbers follow.

If it's a big score and you want to automate the hunt, Bob Zawalich's plugin Filter Hidden Objects is your friend. Make sure you select in its dialog the option to filter text that includes the tilde (~)
