The playback menu that appear when you click on the playback icon on the top ribbon is now positioined partly off the top of my screen so that I cannot acces the blue bar at the top to drag it about, and the thumbnails are almost inaccessible. It is the only menu that does this - the others, keypad, mixer etc appear on screen. Is there a way of resetting its position without having to access the blue bar that allows you to drag it. I think this happened after a Windows update, but i'm not sure, so it may not be a specifically Sibelius problem, though it does not appear in other programs.

referenced above.... I wonder if an alternative to editing the registry would be to completely uninstall Sibelius, then run a registry cleaner such as CCleaner to edit the registry for you ? I presume that deleting settings in stage D would still be required. (Then reinstall, of course. If installing an upgrade might that be a good time to do it ?)

I ask more out of idle curiosity, and perhaps in the hope of learning something on the side.

It would be cracking a nut with a sledgehammer! See another section of my FAQ page for a link to Robin Walker's instructions on how to fully clean a PC or Mac of Sibelus settings. But for this particular issue just do what's needed.

It used to be possible to do this in a repeatable way by something like:

1. Resize the Sibelius main window to less than the full screen, and move a sub-windows was outside the main window.
2. Close the sub-window.
3. Close Sibelius
4. Restart Sibelius with a bigger main window.
5. Re-open the sub-window, and Sibelius "remembers" it should be outside the main window - oops, but that is now off the screen.

(The details might not be 100% right, but that's the general idea of how to break it).

On Window 7 and Windows 10 forums (and probably Windows 8 forums, too) there are numerous warning to stay away from the registry function of CCleaner and other such products. They can leave you with corrupted registries. At the very least, make sure you have a good recent backup and are prepared to do a full restore of your Windows system.

I suspect such dire results are rare, but I'm not willing to chance it.

I will not allow CCleaner or any other so-called "registry cleaner" to come anywhere near any PC for which I am responsible.

It's quite useful if you stick to the basic cleanup function that doesn't touch the registry but just clears out temporary files though. And it's got a convenient Startup Programs manager.
