Sib. 6.x: Piano notation
Posted by Richielein - 21 Apr 05:34PM
I've used Sibelius a lot for bass guitar scores, and I'm happy with that. I have a problem when it comes to piano. What is the best way to notate piano music? When I try to notate for example a quarter note play at the same time as two eighth notes, it won't let me add the eighth notes without eliminating the quarter note. Do I have to use different voice numbers? It doesn't seem like a very smooth way to do things. There must be a better way. Any advice welcomed.

You must use different voices. That's the way any instrument that can play more than one note at a time with different rhythms is notated.

OK, thanks! I kinda thought that was what I had to do, but it still seems kind of awkward.

Can you think of a better system?

It may seem awkward, but although it's evolved, it has been written that way for 350 years. One thing -- the latest version of Sibelius helps out a bit by making duplicate rests between voices easier to spot and move. You'll still have to clean it up, but it's a lot easier now. If you do a lot of keyboard music, that may make it worth upgrading.

If you do a lot of (complex) keyboard music, then it is most definitely worth upgrading - but to a different notation program from Sibelius.

Any two voice staves benefit from the recent improvement to rest positions and is a real time-saver.
A bit like magnetic layout, the positioning is good most of the time.
You can download the trial version.

Does Rob Tuley really think that a person who finds voices in Sibelius a bit awkward would welcome Lilypond as being simpler? Really?
But I suppose anything is possible.
I'd love to get Richielein's take on this if he tried it out.
