Sib. 7.1.3: Visions
Posted by byxx - 19 Apr 01:48PM
I sometimes check the capabilities of Sibelius to work with Vienna Ensemble Pro and DAWs.

Here I ran into the following problems:

The Manual Sound settings (set to Vienna Special Edition) are not saved properly, always jumps back to Sibelius Sounds, although I picked Vienna Sound Library Several times with saving this setting after that. The behavior is not explainable and had to be repeated several times.

The mixer in Sibelius does not react properly and does not indicate the channels immediately, when I chose Vienna Ensemble in the mixer Pop ups. After some time midi channels in the mixer are chose able.

After some work my already set 16 MIDI channels I set up disappeared and only 3 channels have been displayed in the Manual Settings area. No idea why…

The expressions I wrote into Sibelius are not reflected in the Vienna Ensemble instruments per se.
As above I chose the Manual Sound Set: Vienna Ensemble Special Edition, I read that this would be the key to let VSL recognize Velocity and Articulation.
After some trial and error the velocity slider in VSL reacts not smoothly but rather jumps around.

I would love to have a look myself and see how things are done with midi controllers in Sibelius as it reacts weird here. I am used to install DAWs for professional use and am no beginner.

Thats the basics…

Now:
Imagine the following for my target use I am envisioning:

Sibelius Midi Out -> Logic Pro X Midi In (running VSL Ensemble Pro)

Where are the limitations in sending Sibelius´ midi information to logic pro x, where I set up Sound Libs and Audio requirements to mix the whole thing. I would let the midi information from Sibelius trigger the VSL Ensemble Instruments in Logic while letting Sibelius run as Rewire Slave.
Thus I want to write everything into score and immediately send this midi information rather than exporting a Midi File into Logic to avoid twice and triple work from arranging and mixing in two different steps.

What is the development status here if it does not really work yet (for intuitive future work)?
I also read in the manual that there is no support or workflow examples to other programs. So it is a leak to have useful film scoring tutorials here to connect the elements for a proper sound standard in the real world.

All this is related to: The sibelius sound set is nice, but hey, no convincing mockups like that nowadays.

So:
I would see Sibelius more as a midi information player from a high demanding producer´s perspective:
How to get the best out of the different worlds of DAW / VSL / Sibelius while not repeating mixing and settings to audition the results with MIDI Files forth and back?
Where to find latest up to date information with high quality working experience?

Thanks so much
Best regards
Tim

Guys, too much?
Come on, it´s just software talk!
Imagine an improvising musician needing proper sound for developing a score while playing to its given audio sound quality. There is no infinite loop function and such.

Band in a box is good, but it can´t score. The audio standards are there. How to mock up in best ways with a cool scoring program, which Sib is out of question?

One question at a time, please. What is the question which you want us to address? Can you provide some evidence of symptoms, such as relevant screen-shots of the problem?

Dear Robin,

Thanks for your answer. I feel that score writers are still in the position of seperating writing and production.
Is there a way to produce within Sibelius in the future?

Helpful features would be:
- Mixer Automation
- Third Party plug ins in channel inserts
...

How much political software separation between Sequencer and Score writing is intended under Avid´s hood?

Imagine: An artist who writes score also uses best sound features in one software as his workflow is interdependent combining written score and sound design at any time during the process, not seperated.

Cheers
Tim

PS: What video tutorials do you recommend at the moment to achieve this regarding setting up Logic Pro X triggered with notation software as a pure MIDI Player. Both programs therefore should run in sync for mixer automation.

Just so you know, although a lot of users would like a combination notation program and sequencer, a substantial number want to keep notation focused on music engraving, not audio production.

The masters write by hand, what can I say.

I have to mock up for my clients as it is a standard in my commercial industry world. Never to mistake with the real art of training to write with pen and developing artistic imagination here.

Just interested how far we can get Sib alone to work for merely industry standards fulfilling the day job as fast as possible...

CCs are great but not used common in the community, I guess.
