Sib. 8.x: Combine rests in 6/8
Posted by Stig Christensen - 02 Feb 03:08PM
Hi
It seems that all my work right now is in 6/8 and 12/8 ;-)
I do a lot by recording in flexi-time.
When I record a 1/8 I wish that the following rests shall be a 1/4 and NOT two 1/8. Is there somewhere I can control this setting?
regards Stig

I don't know the answer, but is this not something that can be achieved by configuring appropriate beaming rules?

Stig will obviously have to make his own decisions, but the reason Sibelius notates the rest as two quavers (eighths) and not one crotchet (quarter) is probably that this is the default way of doing it, according to good engraving practice.

I could quote Gould in support, but someone will say she shouldn't be taken as gospel :-) (It's on p.163, by the way.)

I'm not at all sure there is a setting to over-rule this - I don't think beaming patterns affects it. You can make it happen manually on a case-by-case basis - very time-consuming and pointless, in my view.

The original score is made in Finale by one of my friends, a skilled orchestrator, and I don't think that he has spend a lot of time to correct Finales default rests. Do you think that Finale maybe does it different?

I don't know, Stig. I have no experience of Finale. Maybe someone else will be along with the necessary knowledge.

Editing can often cause rests to be split in non optimal ways. The plugin Note Input>Plugins>Simplify Notation>Combine Tied Notes and Rests will split or combine rests based on their beat groups. This is a somewhat conservative approach but it often does a good job cleaning up piles of disconnected rests.
