"Importing Text"
Posted by Eugene - 01 Feb 01:59PM (edited 01 Feb 03:14PM)
Greetings.

I have a cycle of songs. I would like to place the texts of the poems on pages before the music—as is common in all published song cycles. I have the texts, in two columns, in a Word document. I have created several blank pages after the title page and before the first song. My question is: how can I get the texts from the Word document onto the blank pages? I cannot merely paste them in, neither can I paste them onto the Sibelius clipboard, which seems to require something from the Sibelius document itself. Is there a way to import them? Or do I need to re-type all the words in again?

Thank you.

Eugene

Eugene, if you want to get replies to your question, please edit your original post so as to include a title to this thread.

Your question is unclear in the sense that it is not clear whether you want the texts on a separate page to the music, or on the same page as the music, but above it.

If you want the text on separate pages to the music, it is probably better to export the text from Word into a PDF, and export the music from Sibelius into a PDF, then splice the pages from the two PDFs together into a final PDF with text and music alternating.

If you want the text in the same Sibelius document as the music, then you need to create Sibelius text objects, then paste the text from Word into the Sibelius text object while in text-editing mode.

Sibelius will not handle two-column text directly from Word: you have to fake it in Sibelius with two text objects carefully aligned.

Sorry, Robin. The title of this subject is "importing text." The songs of this cycle all have texts, or lyrics, placed under the notes. What I want is a number of pages containing the complete cycle of poems (there are thirteen of them) before the pages containing the music (and the lyrics, of course). If I understand you correctly, this must be done via PDFs, splicing two of them together. (I have absolutely no idea how this might be done!) Perhaps, in the end, the easiest solution is simply to type the words onto the blank pages. In a single column this amounts to seven pages, in two columns there are four pages. Double columns save paper and are also commonly used, at least in all the songs I have looked at. You say double columns must be "faked" in Sibelius; perhaps you can tell me how to do this.

Thanks again,

Eugene

It's a standard feature of Adobe Acrobat, or any other PDF editor. Maybe even Mac OS Preview can do it? Does any Mac user know?

One Sibelius text object for the left column;
another Sibelius text object for the right column;
align them carefully.

As of Snow Leopard Preview could do this. I would like to hope the feature was not removed in later versions of OS X but with Apple who knows. Someone here surely can confirm it.

You can probably do what you need within Sibelius. But, yes, there's a lot of sense in preparing music-less pages in a design program and pasting up a PDF.

As you have 13 pages that you want to insert it really might be the best to merge 2 PDFs together:
Export both your Word document and your score as PDF, then in Preview you should be able to insert the pages from Word PDF into score PDF.

(I would recommend the Project in my signature for such more complex documents, but you would need to learn a different word program and would be my "beta tester" for OSX. :-) )
