Sib. 8.x: Brass Band - Trombone section
Posted by Charles - 29 Jan 09:28PM
I'm trying to help my daughter write out a piece for brass band. She has brought some work home that I think was originally made on Sibelius version 3.0 and we are using version 8.1

In the English brass band 1st and 2nd trombones play are in treble clef and transposed like a cornet or Euphonium. We can alter the part so it is in treble, but appears two octaves down and still in concert pitch. Correcting this creates a painful trombone sound in the playback and the part is still yet to be transposed for a Bb instrument.

IS there an easy fix like another default template I can download for brass band that would correct this.

Many thanks

Are you using proper trombone instruments? Try inserti g a trombone treble clef instrument and copying the notes onto it. Then delete the original.

Well we took the default from the brass band score. I'll have a go at what you suggest. Many thanks

Charles, just a thought have you clicked on transposing score? I still use Sib6 but I think the default brass band score in Sib7/8 is in concert pitch, you then have to click on transposing score.

In Sib7, the brass band template score is transposed as default. I have checked every instrument and transposition is correct. In the non-transposing score the low instruments are all octave shifted and still in treble clef (the only exception being the non transposing bass trombone). If you want to post me your score (in sib.7 format), I will be happy to check it out for you.

I use the BB template all the time and have never had an issue. But I think I did used to in Sib 6. Robin has a better memory than I, but I think someone recreated a template for me. (But I could be dreaming...)

Does the attached MSS do it for you?

If the non-transposing instruments are all in treble clef, it is most likely to be Sib's own template. If the low instruments are in bass clef at true pitch, as in my own template, it most likely to be a user edited creation.

Hi Thank you for all your responses. Its very much appreciated. I think it must have been something to do with templates for brass bands in older version of Sibelius. Creating a brand new band piece in Sib 8.1 is ok. Its a cut and paste job unless anyone knows of an easy conversion tool.
All the best

Try using [change instrument] on the home tab. Choose Trombone in Bb Treble clef from the list and then click to the left of the instrument name. It won't transpose notes at the wrong pitch, but at least all the parameters for the instrument will be correct. Triple clicking the staff will select all objects on the staff and allow you to move them to the correct place (up an 8ve etc).

[Edit] Forgot to say, you need to do this on the first page of music. Doing it anywhere else will still insert an instrument change, but it will not affect any music before the change.

In each new version, unpublished tweaks are often made to Instrument Definitions and the Playback Dictionary. These changes are seldom 'show-stoppers' from one version to the next but over several versions.....

You can import just the current playback dictionary and instrument definitions but you are foced to accept the associated Text Styles for instrument definitions, which you may have changed.
