Sib. 8.x: Playback issues
Posted by MikeK - 24 Jan 03:38PM (edited 24 Jan 03:59PM)
I am Currently using Sibelius 8 and i am running on Windows 10.
In my score i have Various Cornet Parts.
On playback at times the muted cornet sound happens on a different cornet part even though i have not put muted.
For Example Movement 3 Rep Cornet 2nd and 3rd Cornets are muted the Solo Cornets are open but when i play back the score all cornets come through as muted in certain sections but if i take off the mutes on the lower cornets then nothing is muted.
I have installed ASIO4ALL and after a few attempts i have got it working.
I never had this problem in Sib7.
The laptop i am using is brand new.
I can get the score to play everything without the mute sounds but not with them.
Please help.

I can't play your v8 score, Mike, but is it possible all your cornets are playing on the same channel? Preferences/Playback/Use same slot for similar instruments. Is it checked?

Ive unchecked the boxes and its cleared the Solo cornet 1-2 issue out but 3-4 are still playing muted when they should be open.
Thanks for the tip though.

Here it is for Sibelius 7, so we can all have a shot at the problem.

I'm assuming we'll be using Sibelius 7 sounds for playback, although it arrived set to General MIDI?

Give us a bar number where this is happening, please? And please confirm that you're using Sibelius 7 sounds for playback?

It is more usual to use the word "mute" to mute cornets and the word "open" to unmute them. Most brass band cornet players I lnow would look at me askance if I gave them the posh orchestral string directions.

TBH, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack without an indication of where the problem occurs - especially as your cornet parts are on split staves. Could it be that a mute/unmute direction is attached to the wrong staff?

Another possibility, because you are not only using different staves but different voices (overkill in my estimation) try making the text in voice 5. Filter for technique text and then press [alt]5.

The reason that there are playback problems is that the original Sibelius 8 score is configured to use Playback Configuration "General MIDI (Basic)". There are too many staves in the score to be played by "General MIDI (Basic)", which is limited to 16 different sounds. Sibelius therefore forces some staves to share inappropriate sounds.

To hear the score properly, use Playback Configuration "Sibelius 7 Sounds", and ensure that you have installed Sibelius 7 Sounds.

Hi Robin,

I'm having a similar problem.
I have already installed Sibelius 7 sounds but they do not show up as an option for playback in the 'setup' window, nor do they show up in the 'configuration' dropdown menu. For some reason it only says that I have Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth installed in the devices shown in the 'setup' window.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as Sibelius 7 sounds are part of the reason I bought Sibelius in the first place!

Andrew, please describe the process by which you installed Sibelius 7 Sounds. Did you really install the full Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library, or merely a sounds "updater"?

Please attach a screen-shot of the Windows Explorer "Properties" panel (tab General) for the folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\

The screen-shot shows only 67 files installed, when there should be 1147 files for a full installation. Clearly, the Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library has not been fully installed.

The screen-shot is not of the location requested. Please attach a screen-shot of the location requested above, precisely.

Please describe the process you carried out by which you thought you installed the Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library.

Hmm well I downloaded and installed Sibelius 8 through the Avid Application Manager, after which I downloaded the Sibelius 7.5 Sounds file from my Avid Account 'My Products' page. After I 'installed' the Sounds, I did not end up with a C: Program Files(x86)/Avid/Sibelius/Sibelius Sounds folder. Instead I tried putting the folder containing the sounds into the Sibelius folder, to no avail. How should I go about installing the sounds properly?

What was the exact name of the file that was downloaded from the "My Products" page, and what size was it?

> How should I go about installing the sounds properly?

The download is a .zip archive. First you must un-zip the archive into a known folder. One of the files that is produced in that folder will be a shortcut to the installer executable, called "Sibelius 7 Sounds Installer". Then you must execute the installer (double-click it).

Installation will take a long time: longer than the original un-zipping took.

Sibelius_Sounds_7_5_0_Win_81290.zip was the file and it was 23.23GB.

And you still don't have a folder at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\
??

In that case, please use regedit to read out the value of the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\ContentPath

A (non-default) example is attached.

That is not the default installation location for the Sibelius 7 Sounds library. Presumably, you chose a custom installation location during your first-ever use of the Sibelius Sounds installer, which got automatically copied into all subsequent sounds installation attempts (once set, cannot be changed in the installer).

This explains why you could not find the sound library at its default location in C:\Program Files (x86)\

Does Sibelius Player now work with the sample library in this non-standard location?

I've found the 1,147 file folder in the non-standard location, but even though I selected it for use in Sibelius, the Player would not work. Attached is a picture of the setup window and configuration dropdown. Do you recommend that I re-install the files to the default/standard location? If so, do I have to delete the files at the non-standard location?

Thanks again!

Do things in this order:
- quit Sibelius;
- use regedit to DELETE the registry key ContentPath from the left-hand column, as shown in my previous screen-shot;
- delete the files installed at the wrong location;
- run the Sibelius 7 Sounds Installer;
- when it finishes, launch Sibelius.

Robin,

I did as you instructed and deleted the registry key ContentPath, and deleted the files installed in the wrong location.

I then installed the Sibelius 7 Sounds into the correct folder (see attached), but the same issue still persists in which there are no sibelius 7 sounds configurations and only microsoft GS wavetable synth available in the setup window.

Sibelius did not give me the option to specify a location for the new Sounds folder after I installed it...any ideas?

Thanks,
Andrew

Your screen-shot of "Audio Engine Options" shows clearly that Sibelius has not found any audio output device on your computer. Does your computer in fact have an audio output device ("sound card"), and, if so, what brand and model is it?

Another possibility is that Sibelius is launching in "ReWire" mode (this can only happen if a ReWire host, such as a DAW, has been in use on the PC). Please click the "Repair" button towards the bottom of "Audio Engine Options" to see whether that makes any difference the next time that Sibelius is launched.

See attached for details. I've just been using the default sound card that came with the laptop (Realtek High Definition Audio)

OK, now do this:
- ensure that Sibelius is fully quit;
- click whatever passes for a Start button in Windows 10;
- within the Start menu, find the "Avid" folder and click it;
- inside the Start->Avid folder, click "Sibelius";
- inside the Start->Avid->Sibelius folder, click "Sibelius User Data";
- in the folder that opens, delete the folder "PlogueEngine";
- now launch Sibelius, and try looking at "Audio Engine Options" again.

You never told us that you had all these other audio devices: you only mentioned the RealTek. What are each of these for? Is the physical hardware for these devices actually connected to the PC? Do you actually need these drivers?

If you have upgraded to Windows 10 since installing those devices, it is entirely possible that some of the drivers are broken, and need updating to be Windows 10 compatible.

In this case, uninstall (in control panel Programs and Features) all the device drivers that are out-of-date, and get the latest Windows 10 driver versions: install them only if you wish to use that physical device again.

I would start off by uninstalling ASIO4ALL, as that removes a number of variables. As you uninstall each unwanted audio device, try Sibelius again.

An alternative way of proceeding is to create an ASIO black-list to tell Sibelius not to try to use specific named ASIO devices. I'll say more about that if you need to go down that road.

Hi Robin,

Here is the new Plogue Engine text after I removed all the ASIOs.

The Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO I used for a small audio interface (Steinberg UR-22), which is not currently plugged into my computer.

The rest of the devices I have no idea why they are on my computer, save for the ASIO Avid Driver, which I assume is used for Pro Tools and Sibelius, both of which I have the newest versions.

For now I have removed all the ASIOs to remove any possible variables, but still no luck as Sibelius still cannot seem to find the Sibelius 7 Sounds.

That "ASIO Avid Driver" seems to be the one that is causing the error. Either you need to uninstall it, or black-list it within Sibelius, so that Sibelius does not try to use it.

Can you try the fix explained in:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/en417515

Rename your original DLL file before copying the trial fix one in. The trial fix might not work for an installation as new as Sibelius 8.

OK. This indicates that there was a problem with one of the WASAPI drivers for the installed audio devices.

Could you post the latest state of PlogueEngine_x64.log, please. Thanks in advance.

Thanx for the sib7 version, Laurence. The problem seems to start at measure 22 in 3rd movement. Also, before that, in measure 1, the "senza sord" doesn't seem to want to catch all of the grace notes. I tried shifting it to no avail. I'm also wondering if the soprano should also be muted in that measure. What does "mf +" mean in measure 12? Aha!, looking in the mixer, I see that solo 3/4, 2nd & 3rd cornets are all sharing channel 4. There's a lot of other sharing going on in there too. This could well be the problem. 26 staves and only 16 channels.

Thanks everyone when i get home I will try out all of your solutions.
The mf+,is something I use sometimes.
I've done the split solo cornet parts this to make it easier for them to read it.
Thanks again

If you use this type of notation often for dynamics, you might want to try defining a playback dictionary entry to play it as you wish.

I've just come up with an idea to beat the channel sharing problem. You can create a new instrument definition for muted cornet. Then instead of letting the playback dictionary do the reading, make actual instrument changes for open & muted.

Will that actually make any difference? Unless we're running MIDI out to an external device, I didn't think the channels meant much. When interfacing with Sibelius Sounds we're dealing with a lot more than 16 simultaneous sounds anyway.

I have no recent experience with Sib Sounds, but I see no reason why it should not work. I once noticed that I had a playback dictionary entry for flügelhorn (probably imported from an old version of sib) which worked when I used it instead of making an instrument change. Open cornet and muted cornet (which probably sounds the same as muted trumpet anyway) are different sounds, so why should they not work as two completely different instruments? I'll try it out sometime, as I'm also limited to 16 channels with my Yam XGM box, sometimes experiencing Mike's problem.

Let me know if this works with Sib Sounds. It seems to work well for me. View hidden objects to see instrument changes.

Using Instrument Changes will doubtless work, but seems unnecessary. It won't affect the number of sounds Sibelius is required to play at any particular moment.

But is a solution for anyone who declines to use Sib Sounds and is having a problem with channel sharing? Brass band charts only require 9 sounds at most (probably less) plus percussion, which leaves room in a 16 channel playback to create one or two muted instruments.

Thanks for all you advice.
I've decided to get rid of sibelius 8 alogetherand go back to sibelius 7 where I didn't seem to have these issues.
I have unistalled and reinstalled it picks up old settiings.ive tried everything and it works in parts but when I go back in later it's all over the place again.
I've not got time to keep messing with it everyone I'm writing something.
It feels likes it's been a wasterisk of time and money.
