Sib. 8.x: Sibelius 8.1 update now available
Posted by Sam at Sibelius - 21 Jan 05:13PM (edited 21 Jan 05:19PM)
It is with great pleasure to announce the release of Sibelius 8.1. This upgrade includes several fixes but most importantly some much needed workflow and engraving improvements to Sibelius, allowing you to spend more time writing music than fixing up the score.

The new changes in Sibelius come directly from your feedback here on one forum and from http://sibelius.ideascale.com where we've been able to add three more of the top-10 issues bringing the total to 26.

To get the upgrade, simply open Avid Application Manager and you should get a prompt to download the upgrade. Your downloads will have already been updated in your Avid account too, which you can find at www.avid.com/subscriptions

Below is a summary of what's included in Sibelius 8.1. If you are in Anaheim at the NAMM 2016 show, please drop by Hall A booth 6400 and we'll give you a hands on demo. For news and more info, see http://www.avidblogs.com/sibelius-8-1-now-available-whats-new

Rests avoid notes in other voices

Rests now intelligently avoid notes when writing in multiple voices, and group with each other in a beam-group and/or bar. This feature includes new options in Engraving Rules to allow you to choose how rests are moved and grouped together. These options are on in all new scores and off when opening older scores. To find these new settings, have a look in the new Rests section of Engraving Rules.

MP3 Export

Sibelius 8.1 adds the ability to export directly to MP3, removing the need to convert exported audio in another application. As you may know, there are licensing costs when converting to MP3, which we are covering for you.

Nth time ending lines

First, second and third time ending lines are now placed correctly by default.

Fixes to pinch/stretch and scroll using the trackpad on Mac

We've made further improvements to the way two-finger scrolling and pinch zoom are handled on Mac trackpads. In particular, users of Sibelius 8.0.1 will be aware that scrolling on a Mac was troublesome. This is now vastly improved in Sibelius 8.1.

Official El Capitan support

Sibelius is now officially supported on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.2 and higher.

Google Breakpad

In the event of a crash, Sibelius now offers to upload a report to our servers which is then collated amongst other reports to help guide our efforts in improving Sibelius' stability. All information sent is anonymous.

Further miscellaneous fixes and improvements

  • Sibelius no longer displays an error when using Share > Send using email

  • Many dialogs now aren't stretched on El Capitan

  • "This package is incompatible with this version of OS X" no longer appears when attempting to install the licence server on El Capitan

  • Reduce plug-in now doesn’t degrade to being much slower on subsequent uses

  • A problem where Sibelius would leak file handles is fixed

  • Spaces were missing from the German tutorials

  • Keypad button highlight logic now behaves properly after using the Transformation plug-ins

  • We've added a new "add11" chord to the Chords library

  • All characters in the news feed now display correctly

Sibelius 8.1 also includes several fixes to the most common crashes, which include:

  • generating thumbnail score previews in the Quick Start

  • 'RTTI access violation error' after closing a score, when the Quick Start is disabled

  • crash when quitting Sibelius on El Capitan (mainly fixed by Apple in 10.11.2 and later)

  • using the Explode plug-in in conjunction with Undo operations

  • when adjusting the color parameters of graphics

As always, please get in touch directly with your feedback or comment below. We've already started working on Sibelius 8.2 and are looking forward to bringing more new and innovative features your way.

Sam

There are a few good things here:
I welcome some of the crash fixes.
Rest/note avoidance in multiple voices.
Keypad button highlight logic fix.

It will be interesting to see if the new developers are now getting up to speed and are going to start releasing useful updates.

Anyone have any idea what "A problem where Sibelius would leak file handles" is about?
Is this a problem that extends back to Sib7?
Is the "leak" a storage leak where Sibelius doesn't free some allocated storage, or is this some other kind of leak?
Are the files in question scores being processed or things like S7S sample files?

I'm having a performance problem of Sib7 on Windows 10 that is related to loading S7S sound files so I'm curious about this bug.

Hi Patrick,

A "file handle" is an internal reference to a file on disk. During the course of run of the mill I/O, Sibelius opens and closes many file handles. In certain circumstances, it's possible that a file handle is opened and then doesn't subsequently get closed, a term that is known as "leaking".

The file in question was related to licensing, so it's actually quite unlikely that you would see any visible effect in Sibelius itself. Robin Walker noticed it got introduced in Sibelius 8.0.1, so we fixed it in 8.1.

Just curious: were the fixes to the Reduce and Explode plugins made by changing the plugin code, or were the changes made in Sibelius itself? If the latter, other plugins could be favorably affected as well.

If specific changes were made to the plugin code, I would be very interested in knowing what they were so I could possibly use them elsewhere. If that was the case, could you please contact me directly and give me an idea of what kinds of changes were made?

Thanks

And yet, the question remains "Is it worth upgrading and paying $89 for a single major and a single minor update in 7 months?"

I remain to be convinced. If we had maybe seen two point releases that solved long-standing issues by now (ie quarterly) I might be more willing to part with cash. I'm certainly more hopeful now, but I'm still going to hang fire until June on parting with my money (pr not.)

If the colliding rests - a long-standing problem considered not trivial by the old team - have truly been sorted out, it could modify our attitudes when June comes round.

My nasty, suspicious mind suggests that if the Kiev team programmed this, it must have been with the help of considerable planning inherited from Finsbury Park.

It depends on your definition of "sorted out". Looking at the examples in the blog - well, they seem not to collide with anything. But hardly any of them match the recommendations in Gould, Gardner Read, or the other reference authority.

Some of the detailed examples in the blog look like complete garbage to me - possibly the sort of thing a computer programmer who doesn't know what music looks like might invent.

It takes exactly the same time effort to move a rest from *anywhere* to the *right* place, so this looks like barely an improvement, except for people who don't care much about what their scores look like.

In any case, non-colliding rests and properly placed repeat lines have both been in free software for a decade or more - but curiously, the blog doesn't mention and programs that get these things right, only a list of those that get them wrong. Time to "read between the lines", perhaps.

For me, it doesn't take "exactly the same effort to move a rest from *anywhere* to the *right* place". With this new "wrong place", it's easier to drag the rest. It's more difficult if the rest is overlapping a note, being careful to grab the rest and not the note.

So although I agree that the new code still puts rests in the wrong place, it's slightly easier to clean it up now. Not that such an improvement is worth $89 per year. If doing things "less wrong" as as close to "right" as Avid can get, it shouldn't surprise anyone.

Hi Cause,

You might prefer to switch on only the collision avoidance:

1. Go to Engraving Rules > Rests, and tick "Rests avoid notes in other voices".
2. Un-tick "Align rests vertically with surrounding pitches..."

Would you mind sharing some examples where you're not happy with rest placement?

You know, I do LOTS of arrangements for all types of ensembles in a year. I don't have the time to engrave all the musical elements as described by Gould, Gardner Read...still the musicians have NO PROBLEM reading my scores and parts.

Are you going to frame your scores or organizing a "Best looking Score of the year" contest. In MY world I work with real pro's and no-one ever complained if I did not place a rest at the exact millimeter on his part.

I like what the guy said above...I'm glad I don't have to Zoom to 500% to grab the rest and not the actual note.

Reference materials, Gould, Read, Roemer, professionally engraved scores and so on are my first port of call, and something that I refer back to constantly.

A static reference like a book has the benefit of being just that - static. What we're tasked with in Sibelius is boiling those models down into rules that are dynamic - that's to say, algorithms that place rests in a sensible, predictable manner, no matter what you input as a composer or engraver. We then need to provide controls to you, the user, to allow you to flexibly apply those rules in the way that you want to work.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the feature, and even more so that we're working on grass roots notation features. I think Sibelius 8.1 does a good job in common cases. But there is certainly room for improvement; in fact, we're working on some already.

What I'm looking for now from our community is examples where Sibelius doesn't do what you expect, so that I can feed that into the development process and build on the feature. Constructive feedback is very useful.

I don't expect to solve these problems overnight, far from it. I hope, in providing fixes to issues that were reported over the last few weeks, we've given you a little glimpse of what you can expect going forward.

Hi Rob,

I'd be interested to see some examples of where Sibelius' rest placement isn't performing as you expect. It's actually a pretty complex problem we're trying to address here, and the devil is certainly in the details.

We have arranged the controls in Engraving Rules > Rests like this:

1. Rests avoid notes in other voices - basic collision avoidance a la Magnetic Layout.
2. Grouping rests in vertical space - builds on collision avoidance and groups rests according to their beam grouping, optionally taking into account the bar too
3. A further option for controlling how Sibelius manages the transition from multi-voice writing into single voice writing.

Some users, for example, may prefer to have the grouping option switched off, but to have the collision avoidance switched on.

Most promising news to come out of Sibelius HQ since the release of 7.5, if not since the events of 2012 - here are some useful engraving features that appear to work well. Hurray! If 8.2 is similarly useful (and appears before June), then I may well be tempted into the annual upgrade fee.

Interesting to note in Philip R's blog post the fact that the file format has changed *again*. I raised this as a concern with Sam as soon as the new Sibelius model was announced last year, and was told that there was going to be a file format that would be consistent between point versions of Sibelius 8.x - clearly this isn't the case this time around. Is such a format being worked on? It will be a true pain if every point release of the new Sibelius comes with a change in file format.

Alternatively, as Philip suggested in his blog post, a feature for recent older versions (say, 7.5 and 8.x) to open new files (perhaps utilising a cloud feature to transfer the files into the relevant format) would be truly useful here. Otherwise it will be a *nightmare* for collaboration work.

I think that is really great news, especially with Sibelius now being compatible with OS X El Capitan as well as the MP3 export and rest updates.

I'm looking forward to the 8.2 update.

I'm pleasantly surprised at this also, joe mentioned that the consistent update architecture was being worked on, i hope this release sees this architecture so 8.2 can come swiftly, with some truly useful new features. mp3 encoding is indeed a step forward but not something i use much. keep up the good work and pls get 7.2 out before june. i might consider the upgrade then

Hi Nicholas,

We had to up the file version for 8.1 in order to provide logic for opening old scores and deciding whether to update rest positions or not.

I think it's pretty obvious that we're not going to be able to keep on adding file versions with every release. Generally, we'll try to avoid it (it makes our own development easier) but we've also got plans for a more transparent solution.

We'll be aiming to keep the same level of support for exporting/importing from the various legacy versions of Sibelius as we go forward.

Hi Bob,

The changes were inside Sibelius itself. We haven't taken a deep dive into analysing other plug-ins, but the developer responsible did say that we should expect increased performance from other plug-ins too.

I have upgrade from Sibelius 7.5 => Sibelius 8.0.1.40 on January 10 2016 for €94.-. Why have I not access to this Upgrad to Sibelius 8.1???

I do not find a means of making the upgrade of Sibelius 8 => Sibelius 8.1 (but only Sibelius "1 to 7.5" => 8.1... And I do not want to pay €94.- once again.

Thanks for your answer!

Hi Fred,

> Why have I not access to this upgrade

The answer is, you should do! Things to try:

* Restart Application Manager
* Try logging directly into your Avid Account, where you should find your available installers have been updated for you.

If not, let us know and I'll ask one of the team to look into it for you.

Best wishes,

I have bought Sibelius 7.5 on 18th Jan. (with free Sibelius 8) upgrade. I have activacted Sibelius 7.5., but someone at tech support wasn't able to do the job. 3 E-mails without solution. Important! Before releasing Sibelius 8.1.

Today no answer. Is it really tech support? So you are saying, I have bought Sibelius 7.5, but I don't get free Sibelius 8?

When you say "broken" can you say a little more about what is going wrong?

The specific fix we made in 8.1 should improve the performance of the Explode/Reduce function in Sibelius, but the actual functionality should remain the same as in previous versions.

Wonderful! I have no specific plugins that I had such nicely instrumented slowdowns as Dave had, but I would imagine that memory freeing or the like might be responsible, and so other plugins that use and free a lot of memory could well benefit.

When you say that Explode and Reduce were improved, I assume you are referring to the plugins (accessed by the Explode and Reduce icons on Note Input >Arrange), not the corresponding features in Arrange that use built-in code. Am I correct about that?

I installed 8.1 update from 8.0.1 to my Applications folder. In the Version column, it says 8.1.0. I created a sub-folder "Sibelius folder", and moved Sibelius there. Now the Version column says 8.0.1. The version number in Finder / Get Info agrees with whatever shows in the Version column, and it agrees with Sibelius / About Sibelius. I've moved it back and forth a couple of times, and this is reproducible. Very weird.

Oops. The version shown in Finder doesn't agree with that in Sibelius / About Sibelius which always shows 8.1.0. Copying Sibelius from "Applications / Sibelius Folder" to Applications changes the version to 8.1.0. So I have 2 copies, both the same size (923.9 MB) that show different version numbers. My head aches.

One question before I upgrade: I have 7.1.2, and all works well. When I upgrade to 8.1, will I need to download the sound library, as well? Or, can 8.1 find what it already on my hardrive? Yes, I realize that I will have to download the bass clarinet patch, but apart from that, is the program itself?

Thanks, and congratulations on what looks like a very promising development.

Even in Sibelius 8.1 where this is supposed to be fixed. Whenever I scroll with two fingers, the zoom slightly engages. This doesn't happen in any other mac program. I think one way to fix it is to PREVENT ZOOM FROM ENGAGING IF SCROLL OR DRAG IS ENGAGED. In no other mac program can you scroll and zoom at the same time. The threshold to zoom should be increased so that the program first assumes you want to scroll (or if you have 3 fingers on, you obviously want to drag). I hope this problem is resolvable by more testing, but a simple option to turn off pinch zoom would be great fix in the meantime.

I have Sibelius v7.5.1, payed €94 for an upgrade hopefully to v8.1, but in "Products Not Yet Downloaded" there is only an info for me: "No products found".
No any instructions or link to go back in case I missed something. On the email form Avid there is an Order No. and my Billing Address, so I don't know if I should wait for a posted parcel or still wait until a mill of the Avid web page will produce for me the download file. No clue…
Searching anything on the Avid website seems to me meaningless because the site so defragments the information that you can only spin around its own tail. For three or four years since I use Sibelius, I have, unfortunately, the worst opinion on the functioning of that page.

Dear Joe,
It is just hillarious, if not grotesque. Somehow I've found my way to the Download and have the app. on my HD but I cannot Activate it. I’m getting “Sibelius wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this”. I understand it is question from my system, so I type it. The window disappears and nothing happens.

Look, since I first bought Sibelius in 2013 I've got the following:
-- Verification Code
-- Activation ID
-- System ID
-- Registration ID
-- Activation ID - again twice
besides twice different ASCs
-- order No (useless)
-- now the Download Code (which doesn't work again if I want to get back for overlooked info)

All of course different each time, and all on separate subpages found on accidentally or blindly or sent by email. Sorry, but Avid is a master of absurd in all dimensions! I lost half a day and it's not solved!

Avid, are you reading this page?

Hi,
I work in a school that recently upgraded to Sibelius 8.0.
In order to work from home (mark students' work and prepare lesson resources) I have just upgraded my own personal version from Sibelius 7.0 to Sibelius 8, however, I now have version 8.1 so I still cannot show the students any of the files I have created nor return their homework to them, once I have opened their work in my newer 8.1 version, they cannot see it in 8.0.
How easy/difficult is it for the school to update from 8.0 to 8.1, will it cost extra...and assuming it can be done, will I experience any further for-seeable issues with viewing students' work and vice versa?

8.1 is a free update for Sibelius 8.0 owners. I can't say how much trouble it would be for the school to deploy 8.1 across their system.

Don't forget you have the option to Export/Previous Version/Sibelius 8.0 in your File menu. Once you get into the habit, it's little more trouble than standard Saving.

What Laurence said, you can export a 8.1 score to any previous version, including 8.0, to make sure scores are compatible.

Thanks Sam

When I choose File > Help > Check for updates, a crash dialog opens up, despite Sibelius still remaining open just behind crash log window.

I attach a screenshot showing the 'crash' in front of evidence that Sibelius 8 hasn't crashed at all. I have sent crash logs directly to you via email.

Issue with rest avoidance feature. Not sure whether this feature takes into account previous manual adjustment. I attach two screenshots, one showing the way the score was with rest avoidance turned off in the Engraving Rules > Rests, and the second showing the rests moved too far down from the treble staff. I also note the interpolation doesn't work for all situations where there are continuous leger lines.

Yes it does. The process should be something like this:

1. Open a file created in an older version of Sibelius.
2. Rests features are all switched off, score appears identically as it did in previous versions.
3. Switch on rests features in engraving rules
4. All rests that are unadjusted (i.e. in their default position) are deemed candidates for adjustment. All rests that have been manually moved are not touched.

Could you pop me the excerpt you've taken a screen shot of as a Sibelius score?

Re. the leger lines, can you provide some examples?

Hi Derek,

Can you send us the .crash files themselves instead of a screenshot of them?

A system report would be very useful too:

1. Apple icon in top left
2. About this Mac
3. System Report
4. File > Save

Current theory is that it's not Sibelius crashing at all, but somehow the process is being mis-identified by OSX. Strange!

Hello, how do we update Sibelius???
It's been 30 minutes I'm looking on Avid's website and I can't find it.

thanks

Florent, you simply use "Avid Application Manager" to update both Sibelius and "Avid Application Manager" itself.

Alternatively, the hard way, you download the latest installer from your account at http://my.avid.com/
