Sib. 7.1.3: Export MIDI with tempo changes to GarageBand
Posted by al in la - 23 Nov 05:18AM
Does anyone else port Sibelius MIDI tracks into GB?

When I export my score as MIDI and drag that file into GarageBand to add vocals, it doesn't retain the "rit…" and "accel…" or other tempo data. So the whole song reverts to straight ahead at one tempo.

I'm wondering if that data is normally included by Sibelius? Or do I need to set an option somewhere to include tempo adjustments in the Sib midi output.
Since I don't have another DAW to check it, I'm not entirely sure what's in my midi file.

If it's GarageBand that is overlooking that data somehow, I was hoping a fellow Sibelius/GB user would know what to do?

I know this ain't no GB forum :-} but I can't find any GB site that has this info.

I'm not sure that MIDI can do "rit" or "accel", as those concepts are a bit undefined. MIDI can do absolute tempo values: try using those.

Any decent DAW will have a Tempo Track feature that will let you alter tempo. Cubase does it with a couple of key presses and a mouse click or two. Not sure what GarageBand does. Read the documentation and if it's there you'll find it.

Better to do it in the DAW, as 1) things stay 'on the beat', 2) you'll have better control over what you do, 3) anything you do is reversible and 4) you still have an original MIDI file to go back to if it all goes pear-shaped.

And if you have some decent virtual instruments with your DAW you'll probably be able to get better sounds and effects into yor backing. And, if you use the DAW carefully, you can produce a 'humanised' track, rather than a robotic one.

I suppose it all depends how fussy you are about the result. Me? Very fussy, so I do this sort of thing all the time, it's become second nature.

Thanks Robin, now that I know the gradations don't get into the MIDI, I will use more exact numbers and do it in the DAW.
And thanks Andy, I finally did find the tempo track in GB once I knew what to look for. You're right, it works even easier and more exact than setting tempos in Sibelius.
