Sib. First: Sibelius First does not boot on Surface Pro 4
Posted by Taro Kamiko - 21 Nov 04:13PM
Hi,

I have a problem being not able to use Sibelius First.

Assuming that Sibelius First works on Windows10, I bought Microsoft Surface Pro 4 so that I can work on my scores when I am outside. I installed Sibelius First on the brand new Surface Pro 4 (Core M processor, Windows 10). But I faced a problem that Sibelius First does not boot up.

It seems some heavy background tasks start once I try to start the application because battery consumption becomes suddenly so high (because I can see battery remaining hours drops down from 10 hours to 3 hours even though more than 90% battery full), although I don't see any Sibelius window open. And about a minute later after I patientlly wait doing nothing, I fianlly hear Sibelius Fists's boot up music with a dialogue window of sibelius pop up asking me if I want to check for the new update of the application as usual.

Then after I proceed to next (does not matter either I choose to check for update or not), the main menu screen of Sibelius First (where I can normally choose score type I want to create) never appear but I can only see empty windows desktop screen. The high battery comsumption seems to be continuing. I need to reboot Surface once this happenes to avoid battery keep draining fast.

On the other hand, if I double click .sib file directly, it immediately open a score sheet in Sibelius score editing window. (This is at least workaround to use Sibelius for me...) But if I quit the score edit window, I face same issue without seeing any main menu screen of Sibelius and battery start to drain (battery drain by Sibelius background unknown task is obvious as I monitor battery remaining hours and it suddenly changes from 10 hours to 3 hours).

Did I purchased wrong product which is not supported either by Surface Pro 4 or by Windows 10 plat form? Otherwise what could be the issue...?

The issue is possibly that Sibelius First 7.1.3 is not compatible with the DPI scaling of Windows 10 on the Surface Pro Hi-DPI screen: this gives problems when trying to display the "Quick Start" screen.

There is no fix for this, apart from reducing the Windows 10 DPI scaling below 150%, but this will make Sibelius windows perhaps too small to use comfortably.

Yes! Your suggestion of DPI scaling resolved the problem. As you mentioned the screen font is too small but I still can survive with it. It was anyway too small in degault 200% setting. Hoping that Sibelius First future version has consideration of this aspect.. Thanks for quick solution.

Hi Taro,

Sibelius 7.x tries to load an RSS news feed on startup, which populates the news tab in the quick start. If it's unable to load the feed, then Sibelius can be very slow to start - we found this in school environments for example, where internet access can be strictly limited. It sounds a little bit like the issue you're experiencing here.

Here's a knowledge base article that may help: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/how_to/en423171

Let me know how you get on with that.

As if we needed any more demonstrations that Sibelius is no longer a NOTATION program!

And if Avid's marketing department wants "more functionality" but the only things the project team can think of are bits of pointless bloatware, you might at least make pointless bloatware that actually works.

Hi Joe,

The solution given by Robin on 21 Nov in the post above resolved my problem.

It was DPI scaling which stopped Sibelius First to start on my Surface Pro 4.

Nevertheless thanks for your feedback. And It was good to know Avid provided the tool to disable the news feed.

Hi Taro,

Glad you found a solution. We've got the DPI scaling issue logged on our end and will include it in a future release.
