Sib. 7.5: unfolding bar-repeats
Posted by StefanB - 19 Nov 02:03PM
Hi all,

I'm having a bunch of scores here with lots of one (./.) and two-bar-repeats ( .//.).

Those I'd like to unfold (or "write out").

Is there a plugin to do this? Certain markings (e.g. a start dynamic) should be deleted of course in the later bars.

Thanks for all info,
Stefan

Select the bar or bars before and press r as many times as needed.

There is an unfold repeats plugin but that's to write out in full a section between repeat bar lines.. Bob Z will know if it's available/possible.

I am not aware of a plugin that will do this. I would imagine it would be possible to write one. If unfolding such a bar were simply a matter of copying music and staff objects from the previous bar or bars into a bar with a repeat, it might not even be all that hard.

If repeat barlines or DS/DC, or other system objects needed copying it would change things by orders of magnitude.

The plugin Unfold Repeats works by writing out bars in the order specified in Play > Repeats; that is not what is needed here, and so that plugin will not have any effect on the repeat "bar rests".

It is an interesting problem.

If no one comes froward with such a plugin they have already written, I will play with it a bit and see if it is possible to just do basically what Mike suggests, and copy the contents of previous bars as many times as needed, with no system data copied, and we can see how that works out.

Just to be clear: am I correct that
.//. means repeat the 2 previous bars, rather than repeat the previous bar twice, and
.////. means repeat the 4 previous bars, rather than repeat the previous bar 4 times

?

Hi Bob,

great that you'd like to look into this!

Regarding your last post: Yes, that's exactly what I meant. These are the repeat symbols you can get from the 5th keypad.
In fact, adding the 4-bar-repeat symbol (.////.) would be good as well.

Also: What I wrote in my first post regarding dynamics would be important. See attachment.

Please lemme know if you have something!

Thanks and best! Stefan

My thought is that the plugin would only copy notes, rests, tuplets, and slurs. i.e., what gets played. And it would work on a per-voice basis.

So it is not just a copy of a previous bar. It will not copy any text or lines. It will not extend any lines. Chord symbols are not reproduced.

This may not be totally optimal, but it would likely avoid a lot of mistakes when the wrong things were copied.

I have a rudimentary version of this plugin available (Sib 6+ only). If anyone would like to try it out (you will need to install it manually), please email me for a copy.

I added an option to copy chord symbols, because they seemed to me to be useful.

Hi Bob, yes, please - looking forward seeing a copy.

Regarding the dynamics this might be the most useful:
If there is only one expression text in the repeated passage: Dont copy the text. But if there is more than one textitem, or if there are hairpins, they should be copied.

Best, Stefan

One chord symbol, don't copy. More than one, copy. Similarly for dynamics, expression, technique.

But only if Bob would find building in such "intelligence" an interesting exercise. Otherwise user options are just fine!

Please see http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=687177&groupid=3&

which describes the Unfold Repeat Bar Rests plugin, available on the download page.

I am not sure I considered this an interesting exercise, but it seemed that adding some intelligence makes the plugin more useful, which is a good thing.
