Best paper size, staff size and binding for Vocal Score?
Posted by John Mason - 18 Nov 03:31AM
Have people had good results with Letter size?

I'm thinking about using a slightly larger size, such as Concert (9" x 12").

Most piano music I've seen uses 7 mm staves. Most vocal scores I've seen use 6 mm staves.

I'd like to be good to the rehearsal pianist, so I'm thinking 6.5-7.0 mm.

Is it OK to use a spiral (plastic coil) binding?

Thanks.

Choralists would be uncomfortable holding Concert size sheet-music.

Concert-size paper is fine on a music-stand or piano.

Pianists need about 6.5 to 7.0mm staves.

You don't have to give choralists and pianists the same sheet-music: you can make the pianist's larger.

Plastic coil bindings are ubiquitous, cheap, and easy. But they tend to make for noisy page-turns.

Just make sure the lyrics are easily readable in all situations.

If you have a duplex printer:
Singers usually cope with booklet printed parts - i.e double sided - stapled in the middle - not suitable for longer pieces.

Many choirs have their music in ring binders - again double sided.
More expensive - double sided - in clear plastic - in ring binder- makes for a bulky, heavy book though.

The other disadvantage of comb/spiral binding is that the pages tear very easily on the bound side.

Following on from Mike's suggestion - 'keep absolute' for lyrics can be useful if you have to use small staves - 6mm should be a minimum but, occasionally a tiny reduction (5.8mm say) can have a dramatic effect on the number of pages required.

For a one off session, 80gm may be ok but for prolonged use you need 100gm+. I don't know the U.S. equivalents.

Different methods - not all suitable for all occasions.

I never use less than 100gsm. Makes for much easier rehearsals when the music stays - and stays upright - on the the stand!

I use 32 lb paper which is easily found here in Canada which is 120gsm. It stands up to 3 ring page turns.

Just to clarify my comment about 80gm paper - it is certainly never suitable for music stands/orchestral players but I have seen it used in ring bound - hand held choir books - for limited use.

Personally I never use less than 100gm paper.
