As the release notes for 8.0.1 make clear, Sibelius is not yet supported under El Capitan. Mac users of Sibelius should not upgrade to El Capitan until Sibelius is compatible with El Capitan.

That release notes never came out during the update process (via Avid Application Manager.)

Lex:

Sibelius 8 has not yet been certified for El Capital - hate to have to say this but you should have checked for compatibility before installing, especially if it is a critical application for your work.

Doesn't matter whether or not there is a mention in the Application Manager (which is a bit flaky, anyway).

This is true for every OS, mac or PC (I'm still on Windows 7). Never upgrade immediately unless you are certain it has either been verified to work by a decent group of peer users, or has been officially certified to be compatible.

Avid is not the only company, by the way, Native Instruments has issued a generic caution as well.

I can't disagree more.

First. QA testing is not decent user's job. It's Avid's job to do. And it has to be done "before" product's official release. Also, 8.0.0 had no issue with El Capitan. I had enough test for 8.0.0 with El Capitan. Crashing in 8.0.1 is a newly introduced regression issue.

Second. If they've failed to meet the compatibility with El Capitan, why on earth didn't Avid warn users about that fact via AAM? AAM only spoke loud about 100 improvements of 8.0.1 update. The only thing users really should know about 8.0.1 is that it won't run on El Capitan. Such a "crucial" info should have been mentioned in the update panel in Avid Application Manager, shouldn't it? A single phrase would have prevented me from updating. But there was none.

Third. Be certain by observing decent group of users' real-life experiences? Oh, okay. So, I should have waited for someone else got in trouble instead of me? That's the solution?

The development cycle, goals and strategies that inform the "growth" of Sibelius have changed just a bit over the past few years. I would not count on AVID doing anything for you. We're in full caveat emptor mode now. There are still some very good people working for AVID, but the management seems to be primarily concerned with short-term profits, not development.

Is there any updated news on this? Feeling I have no choice but to upgrade to 8 for sake of my work, I am nervous about the incompatibility of Sibelius to a system software update that has been out there for a while. Is this been worked on and what's taking so long? What are other Mac users doing?

Sticking with 7.x and Snow Leopard.

If you absolutely must use 8 for work (wonder why as there are no features that would make it necessary, especially for Mac users) is it possible to work out another solution? Specifically, I image the only real need for a Mac user to upgrade to 8 would be to have file compatibility with other users who have for whatever reason made the switch. If this is the case, you don't actually need 8, you need access to Sib files created in version 8 - this can be achieved by other means.

If you don't use (and save) using the 'annotate' feature in Sib 8 - Sib 8 files open without problem in Sib 7.5 (not 7.1.3)

Hi everyone,

Got this information from the Pro Tools community. You might find it useful as we continue to make progress with the qualification of Sibelius on El Capitan:

If using software/drivers not yet qualified for El Capitan, we recommend you use a dual boot system ‪#‎ProTools‬

Hi all,

Here's an update:

Crashing (especially on quit): this issue appears to be related to El Capitan itself. We're working with Apple to get this resolved in a future update to OS X.

Garbled dialogs: we've been unable to reproduce this in house. Lex - is it continuing to affect you?

In any case, as I've mentioned on another thread, we're actively working on El Cap compatibility for our next release.

Any questions, please ask.
