Sib. 7.5: Tie settings from up stem to down stem
Posted by MattBrass - 01 Sep 04:16PM
Is there a way to set the tie from a down stem to up stem note so that the right end of the tie doesn't cross the stem (see attached)? I can't seem to find anything in the manual or forum.

Thanks!

Matt

Select the hidden handle at the right-hand end of the tie, and adjust it leftwards.

I'm looking for a way to globally change all instances. It doesn't happen all that often, but in certain works, it occurs quite a few times. Any further suggestions?

With Engraving Rules/Ties 1/Optical Ties/Right Hand End, you can change where the end of the tie will be globally but that will affect ties that don't intersect stems, too. So that's not really what you want.

I wonder if the plugin Custom Filter could be set up to detect ties that intersect stems? If not, you can use Filter Other to select all tied notes and manually inspect them to see if they need to be changed as Robin has suggested above. Tedious, perhaps, but this seems to occur fairly rarely.

There is no way for a plugin to know or adjust the length of a tie; specifically it cannot tell that a tie intersects the stem of a following note.

What would be useful in this case would be to have a way to Find tied notes; Edit > Find does not do this, and I know of no plugin that will do this, though it should be possible to implement such a thing. The downloadable Filter Other plugin will filter tied notes, but then you would need a way to go from one to the next.

You could then run the downloadable Go To plugin, and choose the option to go to selected objects. This gives you a list of the locations of such objects, and you can go from one to the next while the dialog is up.

No quite as easy as Find, but at least a little better than scanning through the score one at a time.

Bob, could the Custom Filter be used to select only tied notes where the stem directions differ? That might be of help to the OP.

It is harder than that. Custom Filter does not look at individual notes, only chords. So you would at least have to start with Custom Note Filter.

Then you need to be able to calculate the note that a note is tied to. There is a note property that tells you that a note initiates a tie, but not one that says it is the target of a tie. The plugin Filter Tied-To Note Simple makes educated guesses for the target of a note initiating a tie.

It will sometimes guess wrong.

So one could start from there, and possibly filter both the tying and tied to notes. In Sib 7 you can find the stem direction. So the facilities one would need are available or derivable.

But this would likely take days to get right. Filtering tied notes and scanning the results in Go To would probably get you most of the way there and the tools already exist.

Well, I have used Filter Other to find tied notes and it works great. Thank you for that plugin and many others!
