Sib. 7.1.3: Lyric extension lines

Is there a default setting that stops a word shifting to the right when you add an extension line? Attached example on the word 'May' illustrates the problem. Remove the extension line and 'May' aligns perfectly with the 'May' in the voice below it. Add the extension line, it shifts. Why?
I'm on a Mac running OS 10.9.5.

Because that is the standard way of engraving vocal music, and Sibelius implements the standard. Any syllable with a lyric hyphen or lyric extension line is aligned so that its left end starts under the attached note; stand-alone syllables are centred on the note.

Gazza, i really find the 'essential dictionary of music notation' a really useful reference to understand a bit why sibelius does what it does. There are better books but this is a good cheap quick reference.

Fraser: thanks for your recommendation which I'll check out. Elaine Gould writes 'Some editions place all syllables consistently to the left of the note, but, in general, this is not helpful. From time to time there may be an aesthetic case for doing so, in order to align vertically either the same text below different staves (my score example!) or different texts below the same voice part. (However, this style has not been adopted in the relevant sections below...)'
And given what a pain that would be to do on Sibelius I can't say I blame her!
