Sib. 6.x: Windows 10
Posted by Harry in Covington - 24 Aug 05:30PM
Should I un-register Sib before attempting install of W 10, just as a precaution? I lost my second registration years ago when school computer died the death, so this is the only one I have. Just asking because I am not much of a computer person. I am not in any hurry because apparently I am the only one on the planet who has no problems with W8.1. Really...
Thanks.

It couldn't do any harm, and only takes a few seconds. So why not? Though it shouldn't be required.

I`m not afraid to say I am totally confused with everything that Avid is throwing at us. Why on earth should Harry have to unregister *anything* before installing Windows 10?
It seems to me that all software companies have totally lost the plot by absolutely refusing to recognise all other software.
It`s almost as though cattle farmers are producing enormously different kinds of milk which require a password and a serial number before being given permission to pour into a 2 gigabyte tea bag.
UTTER MADNESS. THE WHOLE INDUSTRY WILL COLLAPSE SOON. IT`S ALREADY STARTED IN CHINA . . . . . .

He doesn't have to. But it won't do any harm if he does. And it seems it will ease his mind to do so.

There may be some logic to it. If he's unlucky enough to have the Win10 install brick his PC, and he already has Sibelius registered on 2 PCs. Unregistering Sibelius first would make moving it to a 3rd PC easy.

(Uh, try to ignore the odd temporal shifts in that paragraph. He obviously wouldn't have Sibelius registered on 2 PCs if he unregistered one.)

I haven't heard of anyone having a PC destroyed by the Win 10 installation but stranger things have happened.

I don't think an OS upgrade is going to "brick" a PC in the way it might a tablet or phone, leaving no way in and no option but to discard it!

Actually brick it no, but plenty of examples online of endless reboot cycles. Close enough from the frustration point of view...

So do we have any feedback regarding Windows 10 and Sibelius 6? Do they work together or not?

Yes, they're fine. But I strongly suggest you install Sibelius 7.5 on your new computer and delete Sibeius 6 (except for the Sounds, if you like having them as an alternative). Be brave! It will save a lot of confusion.

Switching to Sibelius 7 will be confusing in itself!

If a computer arrived with Windows 7, that's fine by me. Similarly Windows 8.1. I'd now be considering updating either to Windows 10.

But I don't think there's ever been a reason to update a machine from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1.

Please, somebody, tell me why I should switch from working in Sibelius 6 to Sibelius 7.

The ribbon presents an unwelcome learning curve. People say the sounds with Sibelius 7 are no better and may be worse than those with Sibelius 6. Sibelius 7 does not do engraving better than Sibelius 6. What, if anything, does Sibelius 7 do better than Sibelius 6?

I realise Sibelius 7 is 32-bit, but whether that means it cannot use more than 4GB RAM I don't know - I thought that was to do with the machine, not the program.

To me, the whole Sibelius project is dead in the water and I see myself as filling in the time before Steinberg's program emerges. I'm happy to use Sibelius 6 until then, especially if I can get NotePerformer to work with it.

Convince me otherwise.

Not sure if the lack of reply indicates lack of interest, or whether the post has got lost in the general drift, but I'm still open to suggestions.

My opinion only: there is no real reason to go from latest 6 to 7. A few niche improvements here and there that may or may not be relevant to you. The last real overall "IMPROVEMENT" to Sibelius, again in my opinion, was magnetic layout. Everything thereafter has been cosmetic or else niche usage.

Hi Chris--

>Please, somebody, tell me why I should switch from working in Sibelius 6 to Sibelius 7.

I think the best answer, IMHO, is that you SHOULDN'T..

If you get what needs to be done for you with Sib 6 stick with it.

And the main problem I see with using 6 is making sure the OS youre now using doesnt get so updated/upgraded in the future, that it doesnt support Sib 6 anymore. Some people are dedicating older computers for this reason, and freezing the OS on them.

The ribbon isnt anywhere near as hard or bad as its reputation makes it out to be, and I like the video export in Sib 7.5..but in addition to Sib 7 and 7.5 I still use Sib 6 daily.

Im sorry no one responded, as its a good question--so they took me out of mothballs, to give a reply and hopefully others will follow suit. Your replies to me and others are always very cordial.

Good luck with whatever you decide, Chris:)

Thanks Bob

Please don't fret over it, Bob. It's no big deal. I bought both Sibelius 6 and 7 a while back, but because of lack of RAM have never done more than briefly open the latter.

For the moment I shall use the old computer and Sibelius 6 to print the parts to my latest work, then go back to this nice shiny new PC with loads of RAM and try to work out how to install Sibelius 6 on it. I shall probably install Sibelius 7 as well and have a proper dabble. What I am really keen to try is NotePerformer, which I think works with either.

I suppose my questions are really a reaction to a post in which someone was trying to cajole me into ditching Sibelius 6 in favour of 7 and I suppose I thought, "Why should I?"

My best wishes to you once more, Bob. I hope the mothballs are not too uncomfortable.

I can't be sure what Laurence had in mind, but the older the version, the more likely future operating system or hardware upgrades are going to cause incompatibility problems.

However, that's a reason to get the newer version, not necessarily to start using it. And you already have Sib 7.1.3.

Another (pretty feeble) reason to upgrade is that people no longer using Sib 6 are going forget the Sib 6 answers to questions.

So there are a few fairly weak reasons to upgrade to 7.1.1 or 7.5. I doubt you'll find anybody around here that can provide a reason upgrade to Sib 8. :-)

Yes it does, and also works fine with Sib 7.5.

Thanks again:)

Bob

PS And apart from what was mentioned, again I honestly dont see much of a reason to dump Sib 6 for Sib 7.

All is well. After starting the much ado about un-registering, I forgot to do it.
Install of Win10 went just fine, though it took a really long time. Sibelius and my other paid apps are all OK.
From my first experience this morning: Once all installed and running, everything was painfully slow. Once I rebooted the whole thing, everything was back to normal.
I am happy. Fear not the upgrade.
Thanks for all the input.
Harry
