Sib. 7.5: Windows 8.1 with Sibelius 7.5.1 ("Has Stopped working")
Posted by ABree - 21 Aug 09:49PM
Hi All,

Here's my problem:

Error: Sibelius has stopped working. I loaded a 1 midi track Tyros 5 Concert Grand Piano (created a simple soundset-not manual) XML file placed in the Playback Configurations folder of my Sibelius 7.5.1 software running Windows 8.1. I know the soundsetworks because my colleague Bill ran it successfully in Windows 7 Pro.

No Audio engines are being used - No Asio box checked. Just wanting to get the sound from my Yamaha Tyros 5 Keyboard. The Piano Staff loads with notes from the midi file but when clicking play, the error above happens and no playback sound occurs. (Sibelius resets and starts over)

This also happens if you select a Piano staff, record directly to Sibelius 7.5.1 using windows 8.1. The mixer is showing Track 1, Digital Workstation (DW) and Piano a and b. when playback the track 1 there is no green activity in the mixer. The notes get recorded perfectly but on playback the same error occurs. All tests work fine in the playback screens. The notes for testing the input is fine too. I have uninstalled 7.5.1 and reinstalled having no success. I even tried Sibelius 8 as a trial and the same issues occurred. Sibelius 8 was uninstalled. Malwarebytes were disabled I am available every afternoon to troubleshoot. Can you please assist me in achieving a solution. Thank you very much folks!

Please try this:
- open "View reliability history" (type it into the Windows search box);
- right-click on one of the Sibelius crash events and choose "View technical details";
- click "Copy to clipboard";
- paste into your next post in this thread.

Also, please attach screen-shots of the following Sibelius dialogue windows:
1. Playback Devices;
2. Audio Engine Options;
in the state those windows are when you are having problems.

Please also clarify whether Sibelius crashes when performing normal playback though either:
a. General MIDI (Basic); or
b. Sibelius 7 Sounds.

> XML file placed in the Playback Configurations folder of my Sibelius 7.5.1 software...

Please clarify exactly which folder the SoundSet file was added into: no files should be added to the Sibelius software in "Program Files" or "ProgramData": files should be added only to the editable user-data files in the user's AppData folder area.

Can you clarify what is meant by:

> select a Piano staff, record directly to Sibelius 7.5.1 using windows 8.1.

What sequences of keypresses and mouse-clicks are being pressed to do this?

ABree - are you aware that Robin is a technically-proficient Sibelius user who offers a lot of help here, but he is not a Sibelius/Avid employee.

On this forum, attachments must be:
(a) of size less than 900 kBytes;
(b) of type .sib, .png, or .jpg, with the filename extension spelt in lower case.
Some sub-types of JPEG are not accepted. PNG is recommended for screen-shots.

I don't object to receiving e-mails, but it benefits future readers of this thread if as much material as possible is kept in the thread, rather than in private.

In any case, I was going to ask you to e-mail me the XML file(s) that have been added to Sibelius, to see whether I can reproduce any problems here.

My e-mail address is linked from my name above, in the heading.

This was dealt with off-line.
The primary Sibelius crash was resolved by installing a SoundSet for the Tyros 5.
The no-sounds-on-playback problem was resolved by selecting the second MIDI interface, rather than the first, of the Tyros.

I don't myself understand the two MIDI interfaces thing: which is for what?

All the manual says is that there are two MIDI interfaces, both capable of transmitting and receiving 16 channels, making it effectively a 32 part playback instrument.

The keyboard's MIDI setup screens are 'fun' and the owner's manual is fine - providing you already know how it works! (The guys who write the manuals are personal friends and I've written several manuals in my time so I know it isn't easy!)

There are thankfully great, helpful forums like this one for Yamaha keyboards like the Tyros and I'd suggest that ABree signs up to one or more of them. Here's the best one I know: http://www.yamahakeyboardplayers.com

Midi track 1 is no problem here with the Tyros 5 on playback. Importing a 2 midi track is not showing the 2nd voice in the mixer calling it unnamed. All tests of the voices do playback through the Tyros 5. Have no idea why The 2nd midi track is playing the same sound as the 1st one being the Concert Piano from Tyros 5.

Sibelius 7.5.1 does recognize when clicking TEST (playback screen) any of the Tyros 5 sounds providing you put the T5 soundset in the correct sounds folder. The issue is with the staff not sending those midi tracks 2-16 to the mixer and getting them to play back from the Tyros 5. Robin Walker and I are working on it and I thank him for his time and expertise. Stay tune!
