Just upgraded to Sibelius 8 and downloaded Sibelius sounds. I think I installed it but it doesn't show up anywhere.
When I look at Play - configuration "general midi (basic)" is the only thing that shows up.
You downloaded Sibelius Sounds: but did you install it? You should have noticed, because it takes quite some time. There is no harm in installing it again, so just re-run the installer if you are not sure.

Yes, it is a lengthy installation process and I have run it. The instrument files are visible in File Manager. Sibelius 7 Sounds of various types appear in the configuration list on the Sib 'play' menu. But the only sound which actually works is General Midi (basic). What have I done wrong? PS I am using Windows 10 on a brand new PC.
David, please attach screen-shots of the following Sibelius dialogue windows:
1. "Playback Devices";
2. "Audio Engine Options".
Please identify the brand and model of sound card in the PC, and the version number and date of the Windows driver for that sound card (use Device Manager).
Also, did you install Sibelius 7 Sounds from a download, or from DVD-ROMs?
Many thanks Robin.
Sound card: AMD high definition audio device.
Driver date: 09/06/2015
Driver version: 10.0.0.1
Sib sounds installed from a download.
File sizes:
sounds = 23.2GB sounds updater = 505GB Sib8 = 816MB
I have some bass clarinet patches (see attached).

I'm afraid that I don't understand what you mean by "a load of code". There is only one single file inside the .zip file. You should not be trying to open that file. Just unzip the zip file, and take the single file that it contains.

1. Options under the audio engine options interface menu:
Microsoft sounds mapper - output (MME)
Speakers (Realtek High Definition - MME
Primary sound driver (DS)
Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio (DS)
Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio (WASAPI)
2.Default sound playback device: Realtek High Definition Audio (no further information)
3. I have downloaded the bass clarinet patch to my downloads folder. Should I be moving it into Sib somehow? When I click on the file, I see all its code. I'm afraid it's my turn not to understand: when you say "take the single file that it contains". Sorry! What does that mean in practice?

OK, but this information is different from what you said earlier that your sound card was "AMD high definition audio device". It now appears that it is a Realtek.
> 3. I have downloaded the bass clarinet patch to my downloads folder. Should I be moving it into Sib somehow?
Yes, the instructions were given in the web page that you downloaded the Bass Clarinet patch from.
But, before you do that, I'm not convinced that Sibelius Sounds have actually been installed, and Sibelius 7 Sounds needs to be installed before you do anything with the Bass Clarinet patch.
> When I click on the file, I see all its code.
Don't click on it!!
And I still do not understand what you mean by "see all its code". Please attach a screen-shot of what you are seeing.
> when you say "take the single file that it contains". Sorry! What does that mean in practice?
The downloaded file is a .ZIP archive file (the name of the file has a .zip extension, which you should be able to see), which you need first to unpack to obtain the single file that was packed inside the .ZIP archive. In a standard installation of Windows, you can unpack a .ZIP file by right-clicking on it and selecting "Extract all" and, in the dialogue that follows, nominate a known folder location where you want the unpacked contents to appear. When the unpacking has completed, you should be able to see the unpacked files and folders that were previously compressed inside the .ZIP archive.
So, the first question we need to understand is whether Sibelius 7 Sounds have actually been installed. You have downloaded the 23 GB sized file.
1. Have you successfully un-zipped the 23 GB downloaded file?
2. Have you then run the Sounds Installer from amongst the unzipped contents? (This takes a long time.)

Dear Robin, your patience with me is clear for all to see on this forum, and I am glad about that. I feel very stupid for failing to read the patch instructions properly. I now have the patch!
Having previously unzipped the sounds installer, which did indeed take a long time, I have done it again. It is now 34.3GB (1,148 files in 19 folders).
My test piece using a variety of instruments now works! Under Configuration, Sib offers me sounds bracketed chamber, jazz and lite. Do you compose for full orchestra? If so, do you use another type of Sib sound?
For playback of full orchestra, one would normally use playback configuration called just "Sibelius 7 Sounds", and not any of the bracketed options Chamber, Jazz, or Lite.
