Sib. 7.5: VST instruments
Posted by Dennis Larson - 06 Aug 02:12AM
Okay, I've read the Sibelius manual several time, searched numerous threads, researched many websites, tried to assimilate a ton of information... but I have yet to find clear instructions as to how to use VSTs with Sibelius. WHERE to put .dll files; HOW to install: HOW to access downloaded files. I've gotten Hauptwerk to work; how do I get other sound samples to be available (i.e., a good Hammond B3, a different piano sound, jeuxorgan, etc. Can anyone give CLEAR step-by-step instructions, beginning with downloading whatever files are needed.

I'm quite adept with computer file management, but this whole VST thing has me stumped. Help!

If you have 7.5, it can search for VSTs. You can also specify folders to look in. The default is C:\Program Files\Avid\VST Plugins.

If you have bought and downloaded external libraries, their VSTs can either be copied from their own installation folders - NOT moved - to the default folder or you can add a path to the list shown in the attached (copy it from the address bar).

Please be aware that if your VSTs are 32 bit, they will not be visible to 64 bit Sibelius! 32 bit VSTs should be placed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\VST Plugins. They will only be visible to 32 bit Sibelius unless you have something like jbridge.

In my experience, installing 3rd-party VSTs usually ask where to save the dlls.

With Sibelius 7 upwards, you have a choice. You don't necessarily have to copy VST DLLs anywhere: instead, you tell Sibelius where they already are.

EITHER (the Sibelius 7 way):
1. Configure the "Folders" button of "Audio Engine Options" to include the folder location of the VST DLLs you wish Sibelius to use: the location being wherever the third-party VST installer put them;

OR (the old way):
2. Copy (not Move) VST DLLs from where the third-party VST installer put them to:
a) For 64-bit Sibelius on 64-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files\Avid\VSTPlugins\
b) For 32-bit Sibelius on 64-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\VSTPlugins\
c) For 32-bit Sibelius on 32-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files\Avid\VSTPlugins\

In either the old or the new ways, the VST DLLs must have the same architecture as the Sibelius version:
64-bit Sibelius can use only 64-bit VST DLLs;
32-bit Sibelius can use only 32-bit VST DLLs.

The advantage of the new Sibelius 7 method is that when the VST is updated, Sibelius automatically uses the updated DLLs. With the old method, many users forgot to update the DLLs when they updated the VST product.

If you want more samples, you would need to make appropriate purchases of third-party VST products. Perhaps other responders can give you some pointers.

When you ask "HOW to access downloaded files", I'm not clear what problem you are having: perhaps you can give more details?

Thanks Robin, for your prompt and helpful suggestions. I was able to get Sforzando working with Sibelius after copying the appropriate .dll to the Avid/VSTPlugins directory. I think I'm getting a handle on it all; if I copy all the .dll files I want to use into that folder (or set a common folder for VST instruments, and direct Sibelius to reference that), I should be okay. Haven't figured out how to use the full resources of Jeux organ, but working on it. Any other info is appreciated.

Ok Robin I did every option you gave Dennis including making sure 62 bit match, but still no trace of EWSQ VST on my device list.
Any other suggestions?

You will see a Play device not an EWQL device!
