Sib. 7.5: Which "unzip" app is best?
Posted by Tonepainter - 27 Jul 02:04AM
I would like to move a phrase from one voice to another and the instructions indicate that this is done via the "move/copy to another voice" plugin.
Could not unzip this plugin after downloading it. Sibelius instructs to download Winzip, but apparently this program no longer exists. I downloaded "The Unarchiver", but when trying to use this for unzipping the plugin, received message saying that plugin cannot be extracted with that app.

Which app is best for extracting plugins for Mac (on Yosemite)?

Thanks again.

Can you use unzip in the Terminal? It is probably easier than looking for software downloads.

And does not Yosemite any longer include the Archive utility which used to come with the OS and which was the default "unzipper" of OS X?

With Sibelius 7, you no longer need to manually download and unzip plugins. The whole process is automated on the tab File -> Plugins.

And with all such automated download processes, it leaves you with no copy of the original downloaded file that can be installed on other machines. This automated technique is not necessarily better than the old technique.

Regarding the Unzip function, this should be supported on both Macs and Windows with no need for additional programs. And if you really want to get a product (for whatever reason), there is nothing in the Unzip process to differentiate one product from another for expanding .zip files; they all do it. You will have to choose based on your need for other file formats and encryption options.

The app data folder is hidden by default so (in Windows) you have to select 'show hidden folders'

Gentleman, thank you—greatly appreciate the extensive replies.
Since I'm a beginner with this, studied each reply especially because, from what I'm seeing, there's much important information that's missing from the manual, as with downloading/installation of plugins. The manual states that a 3rd party app is required for unzipping; it should clearly be updated to reflect the replies you gave here.

Thanks again.

I don't know what "manual" you are reading.

See section 1.25 of the Sibelius 7.5 Reference for the download and installation of plugins.

I cannot find any reference anywhere in the Reference to the need for 3rd-party applications.

I received instructions from Avid's manual here: http://www.sibelius.com/download/plugins/index.html?help=install

The instructions for using 3rd party software to unzip is under the "Step 2".

I used the instructions in this thread—all plugins installed, all set.
Only I don't understand why the manual's instructions didn't include the information in this thread.
Thank you, I will check section 1.25 for Sibelius 7.5.

You don't need those old web-page instructions now you have Sibelius 7 with automatic plugin download and installation.

I checked section 1.25—yes, it's all there. Thank you.
As stated earlier, am a beginner with Sibelius.
Wanted to copy phrase from voice 1 to voice 2. Saw that a plugin was necessary for that. When typing "plugins" in 7.5's tutorial section, nothing was found (I viewed all the 7.5 tutorials—they make no mention of plugins). When I typed "plugins" in the reference section a few days ago, scrolled downward for several seconds, and after not finding instructions there, I Googled my question, and instantly received Avid's instructions which I posted earlier.
From Robin Walker's instruction, obviously I didn't scroll down enough, but it would be good for Avid to update instructions for plugin installation.

You can also change notes in voice 1 to voice 2 by selecting and pressing:

Shift+V

Indeed it does Mike but you don't need notes in both voices for it to work.
