I've notated a violin part so that there is a fourth touch harmonic. However, Sibelius is playing it as though the fourth is the top tone, not the tone that would be sounded (2 octaves above the actual note). I've used the diamond notehead.

Can Sibelius play this sound? If so, is there a different notehead that I should use?

First you need to edit the diamond head or create a new one and un-check 'Plays'. Then place a 15ma line above the notes and hide it. But I believe there is a plug-in that already does this.

You can get playback if you have the diamond notes set up properly with the shipping plugin Play > Plugins > Playback >Harmonics Playback

If you are just starting from notes, you might find the downloadable plugin
String Harmonics http://www.sibelius.com/download/plugins/index.html?plugin=285 (install from category Notes and Rests)

When I posted my question I must have neglected to check the "Please notify me" box. I just noticed your responses. Thank you.

First: Adrian, your example made sense and works well.

Bob: I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never installed a plug-in. Nevertheless, I went through the "Working with Plug-ins" part of the Sibelius Reference and successfully installed the Harmonics Playback plug-in. I can't figure out what to do next, though. I keep getting the message "No string harmonics were found in the score." and I'm sure it's something I'm doing incorrectly. Would you know?

I got the same message several times when I tried the plug-in too, reason being it didn't recognize the note-head type I was using, nor suggest which type of diamond head I should have used. I also found the check boxes confusing. I took 1/3, 1/4 & 1/5 to be fingered intervals rather than string divisions. glad I'm not the only dum-dum here ;-) The shipped plug-in works fine once you get to understand it. Haven't tried the downloadable plug-in yet. I find my DIY method quite easy to execute.

The shipping Harmonics Playback plugin requires that there be dyads whose low note has notestyle Normal, and whose upper note has style Diamond, which is style 2.

These notes have to be an a precise interval apart:

a major 3rd for 1/5 harmonic
a perfect 4ths for 1/4 harmonic or
a perfect 5th for 1/3 harmonic

If these conditions are not met it will not work.

If you have these conditions and it still does not work, please post the score and I will look at it.

It is very easy to not get the intervals right or the combination of interval and fraction. This is why I wrote the String Harmonics plugin, which just starts with notes and then adds the diamond notes as well as optionally doing the playback stuff.

You do have do install/download String Harmonics, though.
