Sib. 7.5: "Fill Selection w/Slash Notation" seleciton?
Posted by Bill Myers - 23 Jul 12:08AM

Bob (or others), I am trying to use this excellent plugin and it works like a charm if I have "selected" more than one beat in 4/4 and run it. But if I select only a single quarter note, I get a "Please make a passage selection and run the plugin again" message?

You need to Shift/Select the single note to make a passage selection.

Yes - the plugin need a passage selection, so Adrian's solution should work fine.

Although, if you only want a single note to be a slash, why not just change the notehead style in the Notations/Type panel in the Ribbon?

thank you guys, that works like a charm!

btw, I don't *think* there's a mention of that (shift/select to turn a single note selection in to a passage selection) in the manual?

also btw, is there a key combo to select non-contiguous single notes, turning them all in to passages? (then applying the plug?)

I think I discovered it purely by accident, Bill. But as Bob suggests, it's just as easy to change the note-head. Shift/Alt/3 for stemless slash (that's "3" above the qwerty row).

You can only have a single passage selection at one time. But again, what you want is not the job of the plugin, which wants to fill the space in a selection with slash notes.

Just take your multiple selection and apply the notehead style you want from the menu or using the shortcut.

Passage selecting a single note is not done very often, so it probably escaped mention. If you consider the start and end of the rectangle to be the same, place, then this passage from the reference could be said to describe the situation.

To select a passage by clicking:
* Click the note/chord/rest at one corner (e.g. the top left-hand corner) of the “rectangle” you want
to select. If you’re selecting from the start of a bar, it’s quicker just to click an empty part of the bar.
* Shift-click the note/chord/rest at the opposite (e.g. bottom right-hand corner) of the “rectangle.”
Again, if you’re selecting to the end of a bar, just click an empty part of the bar.

re: the attached, I'm selecting the 4 x 16th's on beat 3, then running
"Fill Selection with....". I'm selectiong "beat without stem, One per beat, Voice 1, show in score/parts" and you can see my result?

The plugin was really not meant to be use the way you are using it. It was intended for empty bars, or empty voices in bars, as an easy way to fill large blocks with slash notes on the center line.

The dialog mentions using a different voice if the bar contains notes in voice 1.

What is happening is that a note is being added at the start of the selection, and in this case, the plugin is adding a quarter note.

Since there is already a note in the same voice at that location, what the plugin language does when you add the note is to make a chord using the duration of the existing note. See the screenshot.

If you put the slashes in voice 2 it will work more like what you want.

There are ways to force adding a note to wipe out the existing notes, but that is not default behavior, and in this case I see no value in doing that.In fact it might be shocking if it did that, though I grant the behavior in the present situation is odd.

The intention of the plugin is not to replace the existing notes. If you want that, please delete the notes in the selection, then reselect it and run the plugin again.

Bob, thanks very much for that detailed reply. It clears up a couple of questions I had and help me to use it a lot more efficiently. Thanks again! Oh, and thanks for writing it - - it's the only plugin I've set a hot-key for!
