Sib. 7.5: putting double barlines in the middle of a measure?
Posted by Ross Tucker - 02 Jul 11:50AM
Can anyone tell me how to add a double barline in the middle of a measure?
Thanks.

You can fake them. But what is the meaning of barlines in the middle of a bar? In other words, please provide us with some context of what you are trying to achieve, rather than the particular solution that you have in mind.

Generally, don't. Split the bar so its a real barline. There are plugins that can help you hide the unwanted time signatures, adjust bar numbering, insert a line break if required etc.

I'm still using v6 so if you're on v7 this might be different. It's simply a matter of Create>Barline>Double and you can plonk it where you like.

I often use this (for example) in hymns to show where the new verse starts if there is an anacrusis. This is quite common practice in such situations.

I hope I've understood your question correctly.

There are couple of method to do this. you can insert the time signature and hide it. or insert irregular bar.

I would prefer to add irregular bar, compare to use time signature, distance problem between the first note and barline can be solved too. you even could change the barline as dash line, or double line as you wish.

For several reasons it's better to actually split the bar than just insert a cosmetic barline.

Ross Tucker,

Are you talking about a repeat sign or a double bar sign?

I agree with Laurence - the Split Bar Command will nicely split the bar into 2 bars and you can change the barline of the first split bar to a double barline. This deals with the spacing and bar numbering and time signature issues, so it is really the best way to accomplish this.

I would like a dotted double bar line (not a repeat sign) or the single dotted bar line 'or' the regular double barline. I'm trying to show (in a church hymn) where the verse ends, and the refrain begins ...which happens to be right in the middle of the bar. When I add a double barline it appears right next to the notes. I would like to create some space between the barline and the notes.
Thanks.

If you split the bar, than change the new barline to a double, that will take care of the spacing issues.

If you insert a fake double barline, then, yes, you will need to re-space the other contents of the bar to make room for it. You can do this by selecting the note/rest immediately after the fake barline, and pressing Shift-Alt-rightarrow repeatedly.

By far the least time consuming and low maintenance method is the one suggested above. Use the split bar plug in button on the ribbon, make the separating barline double as you would any other. There's no messing with spacing needed and the plugin takes care of bar numbering.
