Sib. 7.5: Humanized music....
Posted by Francois Harel - 29 Jun 03:03PM
I think that I already asked this question ... but...

When I click the button Live Playback, I se some new options inside the Inspector. I can se 1) Live Velocity 2) Live start position and 3) Live duration.

So inside my 5 string parts, I can select particular notes and change the starting position and/or duration, trying to improve the realism because many times, the first, sec on violins as well as viola start together.

Can I select all notes inside my score and run a script that tweak starting position and/or duration automatically ?

Is someone has created a script like that ?

Is Sib can already make that ?

Thanks

I'm not sure if there is a plugin for this - a quick and dirty way to get humanized playback is to fiddle with the playback settings and choose espressivo or rubato instead of straight. See par. 6.7 of the user manual. The results may or may not be to your liking, short of a live performance your best option is probably to export the score to midi and import it into a sequencing program.

(I've heard that the humanizer or whatever it is called in Finale works better but cannot confirm from personal experience).

There is a plugin to do this (and other things) for sale at:

Be aware, however, that "human feel" and "randomly wrong" are two different things.

Note Performer applied some "random wrongness" to the tuning of brass sounds. It wasn't nice.

The members of a real string ensemble take considerable care to NOT play chords with a ragged attack. Perhaps we should be looking at balance, panning and choice of sample rather than applying random inaccuracies.

It's strange how real musicians strive for perfection, yet computer composers try to emulate raggedness ;-)

Yes, but "perfection" means "perceived perfection" not an over-simple mathematical abstraction. "Perfect" typography (or music notation) is about making things LOOK as if they are "evenly" spaced, even though a ruler will show they are not. The same applies to rhythm, which is a simple feature of "music performance" to quantify objectively compared with other things.

Of course there isn't an objective measure of how "wrong" is "right". As somebody said (I've lost the source), if you take 60 musicians who never played together before and form an orchestra, you start off with at least 60 different ideas about how to count time, and the result only sounds good after enough rehearsal time has been spent in mutual listening and compromising!

I think we're confusing playing in a metronomic, quantised way with playing together.

Real musicians find the former quite unnatural - think how hard it is to play "accurately" enough for Flexitime! But the latter is a basic skill which, as long as an ensemble can hear (seeing helps too) each other, is generally easily and quickly achieved. A conductor can help too!

Avoiding the former does not have to involved sabotaging the latter.

Cmputer playback can be stilted, but composers rarely instruct "with loose ensemble". Even the "singing strings" were far from random!

Oh, I don't know about that. I've heard some (supposedly) human performers that had truly mastered a "randomly wrong" technique.

Hi everyone...

Thank you for you comments.
I always noted that Human Playback from Makemusic Finale was not so bad...
I also checked and noted that I already have the Humanize script from Roman... so I will try it soon.
Thanks.
