Sib. 6.x: New downloadable plugin: Move Time Sig Repeat Barline
Posted by Bob Zawalich - 17 Jun 03:53AM
A new plugin, Move Time Sig Repeat Barline, is available for free download from http://www.sibelius.com/download/plugins/index.html?plugin=521.

In Sib 7 or 7.5, use the plugin installer from category Layout.

When you have a bar that has both a start repeat barline and a time signature, Sibelius put them in the wrong order. The time signature should appear before the barline, but the barline appears first. (see screenshot).

The usual way to fix this is to shift the positions of the time signature and barline using horizontal offsets in the Inspector. This plugin automates this process, and it can perform the shift in the main score and/or in all the parts.

The shifts will be lost if you perform Reset Position on the bars that have been modified. so do not do that if you can avoid it.

Thanks to John Hinchey, Mark Johnson, Tom Owen, Robert Puff, and the members of the Academy for feedback and suggestions. Mark came up the the default values used in the plugin, and I did not even have to ask!

Thank you Bob and your team of happy testing elves. A terrific plugin that addresses an issue which should have been resolved many versions ago.

An open question to all.

What is the convention here? When I was hand-writing scores, I would have put an open bracket before the new time sig. Sibelius does not have one of those. (Note to self for wish-list). The plugin defaults to notating: single barline/new time sig/open repeat. But I'm wondering if it looks cleaner for the reader to hide the first barline so the order is: hidden barline/new time sig/open repeat.

Example attached.

Cheers,
Dave

My understanding is that the correct position is with the time signature on the left and the forward facing repeat sign on the right (as the plugin does it) UNLESS there are time signature changes between the repeat signs. In the latter case, it makes sense for the time signature to be on the right (as Sib defaults).

Thank you for this plugin!

In Gould's book Repeat Bars on page 234, there are examples of changing clefs, key signatures, and time signatures in the middle or repeats. If you are unlucky enough to have to notate such a thing, I suspect you will know how to deal with the various placements, and can deal with it manually.

The plugin is intended for the common situation where you have a repeat barline at the start of the score, and in that case Sibelius is not being intentionally clever, it is just positioning the barline and time signature wrong.

I was told by Daniel at one point that it worked out that way because of how time signatures and barlines are stored in bars, and it was too much work to get the positioning to be right compared to how hard it was to fix by hand, so this never made its way to the top of the very long list of features and bug fixes.

Someone told me that they could tell by glancing at a score that it had been done in Sibelius if the initial repeat barline in a score was in the wrong place. I did not really think it was worth writing a plugin for until it was pointed out to me that all the parts needed adjusting as well. The plugin can save a fair bit of tedious work if you have parts to deal with.

The plugin will adjust any selected bars, but I would suspect it will be most useful at the start of the score.

I hope it proves useful.

Bob, does this work with Sib 6? Your subject line suggests it should, but we cannot get it to work on 6.2.0 build 88.

I suppose we can take two attitudes towards this being fixed in yesterday's 8.2 release. Criticise Avid for merely working mindlessly down the IdeaScale list, or rejoice that at least they now have programmers that can cope with something that Daniel considered a lot of work.

There is a problem with one of the internal calls in Sib 6. I have fixed it and an updated plugin is now available on the download page.
