Not without faking it with manually adding text when you want it to appear, or by making the instruments visible only at section starts and using that option.
The available options in the Engraving rules are pretty clear.

Not sure what you mean by this. Do you not want the full ensemble on the first system? If you hide empty staves and make sure there are no objects on the empty staves this should be enough. You will have to make sure there is a sysem break before the music starts on any system you want hidden.

This is trickier - The default is to have full names on the first system (or after an 'end of section', but the new instruments will not automatically get their full name when they first have music.

I too am striking this problem. How does commercial printing of SATB choral sheet music achieve first system is purely piano introduction of 2 staves then second system is 4 staves S,A,T,B +piano with full vocal instrument names?
The best that I can achieve is short or full names across all systems including the first full SATB system - which I repeat is the second system according to Sib 7.
You can type the full name in technique text, erase background in text properties, kill magnetic layout and drag it over the short name. ...oh, and you'll probably need to pull the start of system to increase the staff margin.
Mike, I am deeply indebted to both you and Robin. Seeing graphics of the appropriate menus was excellent. It has worked well and I now have the music just as I wanted it to be. One is never too old to learn....80 next birthday!
Just noticed Adrian's submission. I can tell you that playback is affected by a section end. It pauses for just over a bar's length and then continues as normal???
i get around this by having 2 files - one for printing and one for generating the choral learning sound files! I have removed the section end on the choral file.
Ah, it seems that there is more than one interpretation of section end. I thought Robin was referring to the use of a final bar-line. This does interrupt time flow between sections. And it seems that if you check section end in bars properties, it also interrupts time flow. But Mike says it doesn't have to, but I don't know where you countermand this.
