Sib. 7.5: What does this mean?
Posted by André van Haren - 20 May 03:24PM
Sometimes I get this message:
"There is something selected that is not in view", and I am wondering, what does this mean? There are no hidden objects, so what does it refer to? Here is a screenshot:

It means exactly what it says.

"There is something selected which is not in view" means that an object which is currently scrolled off the viewable window is in "selected" state, and you might not therefore have intended to create a new object there. This is a warning that if you proceed, whatever you were trying to do will happen off-screen, which might not be what you intended.

Off Screen? I would never have thought of that. Thanks, Robin.

You can also get this if what you are doing is in a part of a multirest - usually adding more bars midstream.

This question comes up so often here that there would seem to be a case that the language of the dialog should be improved. I must admit I found it instantly understandable on first encountering it, but clearly many people don't share that. Though I must also admit that, with the greatest of respect, I am a little surprised that the OP - or anyone else who finds this confusing - would not have made the connection that "not in view" = "off-screen".

I wonder why some people find that language intuitive, and others counter-intuitive. Would be an interesting study.

I also find it a very useful and valuable warning.

And, as a mark of how often this question comes up, when I saw the thread title "What does this mean?" I KNEW what it was about before opening it!

This warning can also occur when attempting to edit/modify notes that appear to be "normal" notes but are actually tuplets (duplets, triplets, etc.) that have had their numbers and brackets hidden using the Inspector. This is common when emulating mixed meters such as 3/4 within 9/8, etc.

Once you realize that is what's causing it, simply acknowledging the warning and continuing on with your work is fine. However, I wouldn't permanently turn off the warning ("don't show again" checkbox) as there are times, as stated above in this thread, when the warning may save you from doing something strange.
