Sib. 7.5: where did my title/composer/top of page info go?
Posted by Jeff Reynolds - 19 May 06:45AM
I started on Sib 3, and moved up to Sib. 6.2, and after buying a new Mac Book Pro a few days ago bought the Sib. 7.5 upgrade. I'm using Yosemite, which should be able to handle any Sib. app.
The problem is the title and composer info at the top of my choral scores does not appear without creating a stand alone title page. I looked and searched to no avail. I've engraved about 10,000 pages on Sib., so know my way around, but this one stumped me. Ideas? I know it's something simple.

Did you delete bar 1 when you added the pickup bar?

There are plug-ins to add or delete a pickup bar safely.

All the objects you are missing are attached to the first bar by default.

I've added wildcards attached to the pickup bar to link to the data in 'score info'

Right click > text > title > click on pickup bar then type
\$title\

If you don't know about wildcards they can be very useful. They are always in the format:
\$xxxxx\

This was all the same in Sibelius 6.2 and on your old computer by the way!

These symptoms are almost always caused by deletion of the first bar of the score, as Roy has said above.

The method of restoring the default Sibelius attachments to the first bar which involves the least specialised knowledge is to:
- add a random instrument to the score;
- delete that instrument from the score.

That process will restore all the items to the first bar which Sibelius would have supplied by default when the score was first created.

I just tried Robin's part creation/deletion trick, and it doesn't seem to restore Title etc. to the top of the Score (or, indeed, Parts). What am I missing?

I cannot tell what you are missing. It works for me every time.

Ah well. It puts the partname in each part, certainly. Can't see any effect on what's being discussed here, the main title and other top-matter.

When making a pickup bar at the beginning, I simply select the 1st bar and change the meter to fit, without deleting it then, if it's for Compline; delete the meter, 1-2 in this case. I'll go back and see if I actually deleted the wrong bar, something I've never done before.
Thanks for all your kind attention and actual expertise (as opposed to faux expertise).

I can heartily recommend RTFM.

There is no title or composer text object in this score. Did you create one or just assume that typing the information into the boxes on the score setup pages would create them? You have to create a text item (use the old rt-click menu from sib 6 - it's easier) and then use wildcards to input your title (\$title\) and Composer (\$composer\) text items from the text submenu.

I think the issue is that if you add title/composer etc when creating a new score from a saved manuscript, the wildcards are internally linked - if you don't add score info at that stage or later delete bar 1, that link is lost forever - you have to add the wildcards to get score info to show.

Try adding the Title to new manuscript then add the Title wildcard and you will see two independent objects - both using the score info.

Many users are surprised that data added to score info at a later stage doesn't automatically appear.

Adding a staff doesn't work for me either Robin. I've tried on another score deleting bar one then adding a staff and the title etc don't appear, only the part name re-appears.

Boys,
It's just a period of adjustment. 7.5 is not so different, internally, just new faces on old windows with that ribbon. Some features are much better like hyphens on dangling texts do not go to end of piece, and treble/8va basso (tenor) clef works a lot better in transposition in playback. I'm not fond of how much of the screen is taken up by stuff I don't need to see.
I found the title and top info by right clicking the 1st bar's clef sign (right clicking the whole 1st bar will not open the window); scrolling down the window to 'text'; following right arrow and choose 'title', 'sub title', composer, lyricist, dedication, etc., and placing them, one at a time, positioning each blinking line in the appropriate place as I did in Sib 6.2.
I also found my metronome by opening file/panels/transport, all different names from Sib.6. I worked a couple new scores to work out the kinks. I have learned again that there can be several ways to arrive at the same destination. This dog may work after all. I looked for the illusive 'wild card', but they have eluded me so far. It would not be a Windows thing, would it? I use a Mac.
regards, as always, jefe

Jeff, wildcards are specific 'text patterns' that automatically reference the information in the File->score info page (title, subtitle etc. If you create a title text and type \$title\ it will automatically pick up the piece's title from the box on that page, for example. That is a wildcard.

As to calling up the old 6.2 type menu, if you select the 1st bar and then click in a white space away from the selection (or whatever the Mac version of that is) you still get the menu.

I used the 'What is where' plugin to find all text items in your score and it found no title or composer text in anywhere in the score.
