Sib. 7.1.3: Sibelius 7 Sounds configuration
Posted by Salieri - 17 May 04:05AM
OK, I gave up on the M-Audio 192 and am using the internal sound chip on my new computer (W 8.1 with lots of memory). But the sound (piano) isn't nearly as good as on my old computer. I would call the sound brittle - some notes are clangy, others sound as though they're under water. I'm using Sibelius 7 Sounds, buffer size 4096 (increasing it made the sound worse), sample rate 44100, latency 92.88. I looked up ASIO4ALL, and it seems that if you use that with Sibelius, you can't use the sound card with anything else. There has to be a better way - surely the many serious composers who use Sibelius would not stand for the subpar sound I'm getting. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

With ASIO4ALL you just can't use another sound device simultaneously while Sibelius is running. Not really a showstopper is it?

Most ASIO device drivers (including ASIO4ALL) are single client. That means you can only operate one ASIO device at a time. That should not be a problem if you only want to use Sib7 sounds. what other ASIO device do you want to use?

If you are on Windows, you can use MME or DS simultaneously with ASIO. I do this when I make recordings into mp3s with Audacity.

Was it you who was complaining a few days ago that the onboard sound was "muffled"? Now it's " brittle". I wonder if you're suffering from Audiophile Disease - listening over-analytically to a new piece of gear, with your judgement distorted by a belief that the more expensive item MUST sound better?

Dear Laurence, I only wish! Yes, initially I did say "muffled," but I was - and still am - struggling to come up with the right words to describe what I hear. What I said yesterday (in addition to "brittle," which was not a good word - it's plainly metaphorical as applied to sound) was that some notes are clangy, but others sound as though they're under water. Maybe I'll ask a different question. Has anyone found settings on the Sib 7 audio engine that are particularly good for piano? BTW, years ago, when I still had Sibelius 5 sounds on my computer, I found that that worked better for piano than 6, maybe even 7. Could I reinstall Sib 5 sounds?

Dear Mike, Thanks for the clarification. I misunderstood - I thought that you could not use any other sound-producing program while Sibelius was running with ASIO4ALL. No, I would not be using any other program that would use ASIO. So I will give it a try. I used the ASIO setting with my AP 192, so that may get me closer to the sound I had before.

Export Audio from one of your Sibelius scores - a process that neither knows or cares what your soundcard and driver is - and burn an audio CD. Play it in your domestic hi-fi system, play it on your computer. Repeat the test with a commercial CD. You should be able to reach some conclusions about what sounds different to what.
