Sib. 7.5: Are Ghost Notes for drums any better in 7.5? [UNSOLVED]
Posted by anp27 - 17 May 12:13AM (edited 17 May 04:16AM)
I'd like to notate ghost notes in Sibelius and have them playback correctly, but have never been successful in previous versions. Are there any improvements in 7.5?

If you'd like to attach a sib file demonstrating your preferred notation for ghost notes, someone might come up with some suggestions how best to achieve playback. I don't think it's going to happen completely automatically.

Ok, so the answer is no I guess. I know about the workarounds and everything, just thought that maybe this was improved in 7.5. Thanks anyway.

Nothing new, that I know of, in Sibelius 7.5 compared with 7. If you're comparing with Sibelius 6, you've got a completely different sample set to play with of course.

it still could be worth posting a sib file showing your current method. Other ideas might be possible...

Hi anp27,

We've not made any changes to the way ghosted notes work in Sib 7.5. You can use live playback to achieve the effect, but it's not as slick as being able to add a bracket to a note and have it be responded to in playback. That's because Sibelius currently doesn't allow a playback dictionary change for a bracketed notehead.

I've attached an example of a Fatback groove type thing. For playback, I'm using live velocity from the inspector. Notation wise, you can use the notehead bracket from the second keypad layout.

You didn't say which version of Sib you currently have, so I'm attaching a v7.5 and v6 example.

Why doesn't this work (see attachments)?

I made a custom Symbol. Assigned it to a new Notehead Type. Added that Notehead to the Drum Map. Set Playback Dictionary parameters for that Notehead. But it doesn't make any difference.

Hi Laurence,

Good idea. The notehead you created attaches itself mid-stem which isn't quite right.

As for why it doesn't play back, this appears to be a little bug. I've tried it with various noteheads, standard and custom, and it fails. It needs further investigation. One for the list I suppose, well spotted!

Remind me where the official list of known bugs is posted?

Hi Laurence,

You can post it on Ideascale if you like but I've actually logged it internally. If you're interested to call this out again in the future with us, the reference is SCRC-1801.

Yes, I know you know about it! What I mean is - how about maintaining a list of confirmed bugs, the work-around (if any) and the news, in due course, that it's been fixed? This could be as simple as a pinned, locked thread here, postable only by Sibelius staff - the last thing we need is another mega-thread ranting about there BEING bugs.

Steinberg have something of this sort on their user forum. IdeaScale COULD have served this purpose, but it's all mixed up with feature requests and comments.

Seeing as you ARE on something of a PR charm offensive... :-)
