Sib. 7.5: New Sibelius promo video...
Posted by Laurence Payne - 16 May 12:47PM (edited 16 May 12:58PM)
...has just been posted on Facebook.

Nice try, Sam Butler. But there are two big problems.

It's dishonest. When running down the "advantages" of the various subscription models you completely forget to mention what happens when a "perpetual" owner stops paying.

And it all LOOKS dishonest. Shoot it again in a studio that can afford an on-camera autocue so it doesn't look like a shifty politician who won't catch his audience's eye. Not good enough for a global brand selling professional media solutions!

Sorry if this sounds like a personal attack. It's aimed at whoever wrote the script, and whoever directed the video.

Thanks for the link.

Thought giving an off hand nod to ProTools was rather nice of Sam.
(Video upper left hand corner....guess they could not find a Sibelius logo to have in the video).

I was waiting for the bit where he said

"Now, I know what you're thinking ... you're thinking, 'He's only doing this because he's a prisoner. He's got a gun at his head and he's being forced to do this ... right?'
"Well, it's true. I am a prisoner, that I cannot deny. But seeing as I've been abandoned by my software development team and my fate now lies in the hands of Avid, I have nothing to lose."

(Almost a quote from the transcript of the first of the series of videos by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cantlie).

I really did not think it that bad - he's got a job to do (well, several jobs to do), and he does it: sell the new plan. I understand Laurences point about what happens when you stop paying, but that's how all ads work - focus on the bright side; in ads here in the US, it's "no money down, 0% interest for 12 months" with no mention of what happens after that if things go awry. So, I don't really blame him - or the writers- for that. My real problem is that all this "New Sibelius" stuff is just nonsense - nothing that has been talked about is anything that makes it significantly better, or even marginally so. Sell the new plan; but don't sell the program as being new - for me that is where the dishonestly lies. But this is all ad-speak; and frankly I find it less dishonest than what Finale has done for years in its "comparison" (yes, quotes) of playback between the two programs. If you want to talk about dishonest...

Certainly Sam can be proud of his presenting skills. With one glaring flaw - the failure to look at his audience. The director should have picked this up.

But isn't this the new norm? I've seen so many videos where the speaker is "talking" to someone just to the left or right of the camera, it did not strike me as odd. It's possible that this is how you get someone who is not a camera-fluent speaker to appear more natural. I know the few times I have had to address a camera, it is a very strange feeling - talking to a lens is not the same as eye contact! But I would agree that it you are trying to convey sincerity, and getting us to believe that this new shiny penny (only $89!)is the next best thing, then yes, eye contact would help!

I think it's quite simply a result of reading the script from a screen beside the camera. Sam didn't have a nervously-wandering eye-line. It was just fixed on the wrong place.

The result is unfortunate, even if it IS common in corporate videos. The young directors making them know all about animations and montages, but often seem to overlook the basics of communication.

Well, true. But then, advertising is not really about communicating - it's about persuasion, about getting us not to look behind the green curtain. Sometimes it's best no to look...

The personal appearance in that advert was for one purpose only - to make us trust the human face behind Sibelius.

I think Avid forget what trade its customers are in.
