Sib. 7.1.3: speakers and sound card
Posted by Salieri - 14 May 09:51PM
I just got my powerful new computer with Windows 8.1 - and the sound isn't working (except using the internal card and the tinny computer speakers). I have the M-Audio Audiophile 192 and the M-Audio AV-40 speakers. I compose small instrumental pieces but I do want good sound.

Laurence Payne recommended ASIO4ALL and I will certainly try that. But I think I will need a new cable to use the audio card in the computer with the AV40s.

But in the long term maybe I want new speakers and also an external interface. Any suggestions? Advice about a temporary fix would also be welcome.

I haven't installed Sibelius yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Yes, the M-Audio Audiophile 192 must now be considered end-of-life I'm afraid. It, and its predecessor, served many of us very well for many years. But all things end...

I think your M-Audio AV-40 speakers have RCA phono inputs? So your first investment must be a cable with a stereo 1/8 jack plug on one end, two phono plugs on the other. This is widely and cheaply available - so much so that it's often called a "computer audio cable". Plug that into the green hole on the back of your computer, I think it will sound just as good as the Audiophile 192 did!

If your Sibelius scores play back with glitches and hesitations (as distinct from poor tonal quality), install ASIO4ALL. If you need even more performance, start looking at external audio interfaces. But I suspect you won't need to.

Don't agonize over problems until there IS a problem! Install Sibelius and try!

Also be aware that ASIO4ALL does not play (behave) well with all systems, but give it a try as it does work for some people.

Oops! I just hit send too soon.
Question: there seem to be several free downloads of ASIO4ALL. Does it matter which one you install? Thanks.

"Yes, the M-Audio Audiophile 192 must now be considered end-of-life..."

It does look like it. Some users claimed to be able to run the 192 on Windows 8 with the XP drivers, but Windows 8.1 seemed to put an end to anything like that - soundcard not recognised, etc.

The external audio interfaces referred to are basically USB soundcards; that is where to look if you're dissatisfied with your sound quality after experimenting with ASIO4ALL.

You do wonder whether someone at M-Audio couldn't just flip the bit that prevented the driver from seeing Windows 8.1 as a valid host, then release it on an "untested, unwarranted, but try it if you like" basis.

Or maybe there's a real systemic incompatibility.

Steinberg, unexpectedly, belatedly but welcomely, came out with an update for the Midex 8 Windows driver that sent a few of us rummaging in the back of cupboards for what we thought was obsolwte junk. There may be hope yet!
