Sib. 7.5: Start up without plugins scan..
Posted by CH1612 - 26 Apr 11:07AM
Hi all,

I have 7.5 on my laptop and sometimes I travel without my iLok which has all my Pro Tools plugins licences on it.

I simply use Sibelius for scoring and its own sounds. I don't require any of my external plugins.

Is there a way to open Sibelius and make it NOT scan all the 500 plugins I can't authorise - any advice appreciated...

Hoping there's a simple solution.

Thanks

Presumably by "plugin" you are referring to VSTs, rather than Sibelius plugin files.

This is easy on Windows, very hard on Mac OS. Which is your case?

If you don't care about sound playback quality, simply remember to uncheck "Use virtual instruments and effects" in Audio Engine Options before going mobile without the iLok.

The downside is that Sibelius's internal Sibelius Player is also disabled when "Use virtual instruments and effects" is unchecked. Only MIDI output will work.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, by plugins I mean the virtual instruments and third party bundles like Waves amongst others. I use these plugins when I'm working in Pro Tools on the same machine.

I do really want to use the Sibelius 7 sounds though.

For example on Pro Tools you can boot up whilst holding a key command and it will open without scanning the system for third party plugins.

I'm using a Mac.

OK, so what you need to do is selectively manage the contents of these two folders:

Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/
Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/

which contain all the 3rd-party AUs and VSTs respectively, but not Sibelius Player, since that is built-in to Sibelius.

For instance, you can adopt a strategy similar to that in:
http://music.tutsplus.com/tutorials/quick-tip-how-to-manage-vst-and-audiounits-plugins-in-mac-os-x--audio-7439
by having active and "Disabled" folders, and moving individual AUs/VSTs between them.

Check whether Sibelius scans sub-folders within "Component" and "VST". If so, this makes things even easier, because you can group all iLok-requiring plugins into one sub-folder in Components and one sub-folder within VST. Then, disabling iLok-requiring plugins requires only one AU sub-folder move (from "Components" to "Components Disabled") and one VST sub-folder move (from "VST" to "VST Disabled").

Do the reverse sub-folder move when you want to re-enable the iLok-requiring plugins.

That's a fabulous reply - thank you.

I will do as you advise, and at least I can then open Sibelius without the half-hour of skipping plugins.

Pro Tools uses the AAX plugin format, but I think Sibelius ignores that and just looks for VST and AU.

Your workaround will be most helpful, but I can't help feeling it would be useful if there was a simple boot-up key command which would just skip looking for AUs and VSTs.

Perhaps Avid could consider something along these lines? It would be very handy.

I should mention that the problem has only happened to me when I've been editing an existing file on the move and the iLok has been safely in my other computer at home!

Thanks again for this reply.
